This and stays for quite a while?

Oh my gong that annoys me.

I've seen the "folder look" twice lately. But it took only minutes to get the full-colour lay-out again (by refreshing).

I'm using Firefox. Maybe this look is browser-dependent, maybe it's the server-response. I don't know (I'm no IT expert).

This happens if the site's Javascript fails to execute. About a year ago there was some mention of this happening in Chrome for a reason I don't remember now.

If you're using something like NoScript you'll want to whitelist the site. Otherwise, if you want to dig into the problem you should look into whether the JavaScript actually fully downloaded and if so, check your JavaScript debugger / console for an error during execution.

Are you using Chrome with Adblock? I think this was the reason before - you need to make an exception for twistypuzzles if you are using it.

I use chrome with adblock and I don't experience any problems with this site.

Maybe only Adblock Plus then

I have Chrome with Ad Block Plus, and I ran into this a while back. Just disable it for this site, and you should be fine.

What exactly does this site use Javascript for? Or more specifically, could disabling javascript for this site get rid of some of the navigation and sidebar items that get in the way of my screen reader reading the actual forum contents?

Disabling JavaScript won't do that. The Chrome extension AdBlock plus has the ability to let you click on any element of a site to permanently hide it as if it was an advert. I used it for a while to hide the sidebar (until I got a bigger monitor).

The site uses JavaScript for the menu bar, which is exactly what we see in the OP - the list that the JS actively formats.
