Hey Sandy,

I was looking at the latest Who's who entries and the last one seemed unfinished. To possibly reveal any hidden printing I selected the text from the beginning of the last post downward. When this action got to the bottom of the visible text it suddenly jumped to the top of the page and and the whole page except for the last post was selected!

How did you do that?
Did you want to do that?
Is this some oddity that can be usefully exploited?

Weird you guys had that because the text was perfectly visible to me, and my connection is terrible.

Well there's probably the problem. Since you're both on FF and it didn't load, and I'm on IE and it did load...

This is happening to me again, with the discussion on jumbling. When I get down to the picture of the JumblePrism core, everything beneath it is blank. It only happens on Firefox though - in IE it seems to work.

Okay, so some troubleshooting here. It's happening in both the Who's Who thread and the Jumbling Puzzles thread, right? Please post the following details:

1. Which page of each thread is it happening on?
2. What is the last message that appears to be full and complete on that page of each thread?
3. If you see enough of the message that has been cut off in each thread, please tell me which ones they are.

Something interesting about me is that I am a part time student and full time worker at 16. I got into a lot of trouble during my freshman year of high school and was expelled. I now attend a charter school and maintain classes during the weekend and hold up a full time job as an Iron Worker erecting and welding steel beams. What happened to me really changed my life and still have high hopes and chances at going <
plus the tops of letters in the next line.

Aha! I see it now. The clipping isn't caused by the page content. It's whiting-out a region of each affected page, always starting at the same position.

1. On the Who's Who thread the issue occurs on page 1, page 2, page 3, and page 4, always in the same location: if I press the PageDn key 41 times, the whiteness starts in the 41st page. It's about 32768 pixels from the top.

2. See #1.

3. See attached screencap from the Jumbling Puzzles thread. Notice the white area clips off part of the attachment?

Some additional observations:

• The clipped area affects mouse (drag) text-selection but not keyboard text-selection. Using the keyboard I can select text behind the clipped area normally, although I can't see it while selecting it.
• If I open a context menu or cover the affected area with another window, the clipped area doesn't redraw as white. It turns black.
• I can click invisible buttons and text in the clipped area. Everything is there, it just isn't visible.
• It ultimately behaves as if the main html is playing normally, then an applet is inadvertently opening an inactive window over the top. Judging from the clipped region, the window would probably have an X position between 6 and 14, and Y position between 32768 and 34482, a width between 977 and 997, and an unknown height.

I realize this isn't a terribly helpful description, but at least the attached PNG should let you see what it looks like.

I see it too now, in the topic Jumbling puzzles. Firefox 3.5.1 under Windows XP.

I downloaded the HTML from one of the affected pages and re-created the problem locally, then I started modifying the HTML to see if I could find the source of the problem.

I've ruled out scripts. The blank area appears even with all the scripts commented out. The blank area does contain active content, you just can't see it. I can even open the "jump to..." list in the lower right corner if I click in the right place.

After much experimentation I'm guessing the problem is that the entire 'forum' content is being displayed within a single <div> and FireFox 3 seems to have a bug that can't display more than 32768 rows of pixels within a <div>. (This is conjecture based on experimentation; I haven't consulted FireFox's bug database.)

To test this theory I manually split the <div> between two forum posts in the middle of the page and suddenly my HTML could render the whole page.

So it's probably a bug in FireFox 3's rendering engine. But a workaround is to divide the page so no individual <div> cell is higher than 32768 pixels. Unfortunately I don't know if that's a practical workaround.

In the forum settings (not personal settings, I think, but global settings) there's an option under phpBB3 to show fewer posts per page... it's not the best option but it's there.

Found this Bugzilla@Mozilla:

"Bug 333994 - Firefox uses signed 16 bit integer for IFRAME height (Content is clipped - not rendered/shown beyond 32767px) [32768]"

It sounds like basically the same bug. It was marked "fixed" on 23 July 2009, but it's unclear whether the fix made it in to the FireFox 3 branch. But it's not a security issue, so the fix might not be available until a major patch.

Thanks for all the research everyone. All posts on a page ARE contained in a single DIV. The light grey border that surrounds the forum content is a DIV.

So what do we do about it? Personally, I'd prefer to avoid changing the design to accomodate a temporary browser bug that will only appear in threads containing numerous lengthy messages.

Has anyone upgraded to the latest version of Firefox to see if the bug is still there? If it is, when is the next release planned for? Does anyone care if I reduce the number of posts per page?

Verified.

I installed it on a VM and confirmed 3.0.12 exhibits the issue and 3.0.13 resolves it. (If you're running FireFox 3.0 just choose "Check for updates" on the Help menu to get 3.0.013.)

But 3.5.2 still exhibits the clipping problem. The bug is marked 'fixed' in Bugzilla, so it will make its way into 3.5 eventually. I don't know when, but it could be within weeks.

If this issue affects you too severely you can choose to installed FireFox 3.0.13 from here or use another browser until the bug is fixed.
