Hi all, meet me--the new articles moderator! Basically, I'm starting this thread to act as a bit of a notice board to allow writers to post what they're working on. This should avoid pile-ups of articles on a single "hot topic", and also help people stick to some sort of Time frame. I'll get the ball rolling by throwing out a few possible topics that seem to have sparked a lot of interest recently: 1. Patents, copyrights, puzzles, and you. 2. History / evolution of puzzle XXXX. 3. CAD software--availability and tutorials. 4. Comparisons and contrasts of the collapse of the economy of Iceland vs. present day events in NZ. No wait, that's my own thing... Basically whatever you can think of! I'm well open to out-there articles, and actively encourage them. Keep in mind though, they might not make it in--violations of the rules of the site will be an automatic "fail"--or may require some editing. I cannot think of a specific example at the moment, but I am putting the statement out there so nobody is met with any surprises. So there we have it, an "articles in progress" thread. Cheers!

How about an article on 101 ways to use the rubik's cube to enhance your um...pullability? Or how I spent a summer naked mud wrestling in cube lube with vivid descriptions? Would those be edited?

Hmm, good question! I would tend to think so, but I'm honestly not too sure--this role hasn't come with an instruction sheet, so I'm not 100% certain what to do at the moment!
As a start, I should try migrating the quoted link to a standalone article, and see what happens...

I suggested in this thread viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7683that it should be transformed into an article. Now seems be the perfect moment to mention it again.

Yeah, there are definitely some wonderful articles in this forum. How-to's, puzzle histories, interviews, that "Twisty" timeline, etc. Once things fall off the front page of a forum, they are basically forgotten. Turning some of these gems into proper articles gives them a much better chance of satisfying the curious reader for years to come.

Well is going to sound quite dumb, but, uh, how? I've done some hunting about, and cannot seem to find where I need to go to actually get write access to the articles section...

Nah, there are no dumb questions, only dumb people!
Seriously though, you can stop hunting because I haven't written that code yet! I am planning on delaying it until the new design is released so that the article adding/editing tools can incorporate the new article page design directly (rather than incorporate the exising one for a month or two then change it all to suit the new design). Incidentally, this also applies to Solutions and other pages... all of which will be similarly-formatted and editable by the same tool, depending on your content moderator rights.
Meanwhile, prepare the articles (or solutions) either in your favourite word processor or in HTML if you can work with the sample article I've sent you, then pass them on to me for uploading. If the article includes images, send me the prepared image files seperately so they can be properly formatted without having to be first exported from the word processor document. If you have no experience preparing image files, ask for help in the forum first, but consider me a capable last resort if no one else steps forward. I say this because at the moment my primary twisty focus is on delivering a batch of new features... some known, some secret.
Gone for the weekend. See you Monday.
Sandy
