A fantastic work. Your ideas for new puzzles are always extraordinary, searching for new concepts instead of repeating common patters. Congrats (may I say - as usual) also to this puzzle design.

Thomas wrote: Then you're probably not authorised to access the Dedicated Members Board. Thomas Well, looks like I missed this thread, I am also not a participant of the DMB. I cannot tell, if I missed anything, but while I am not sure about the rules (time/posting/invitation) I'll accept this for the moment. - Frank -

I can't tell if I'm missing out on a joke, or if I'm not welcome on the dedicated members board. Hmm...

Off Topic: Noah wrote: I can't tell if I'm missing out on a joke, or if I'm not welcome on the dedicated members board. Hmm... I'm just as confused as you . It was my idea and I think I would know by now if it was real. To be honest I would see why I'm not allowed on. I have not been here as long as some people and I am not as important to the forum, but I would just like to know if there is one. ON topic: Can we see some mechanism pictures. I'm cuious to see if it's got any similarity to the Helicpter cube.

TheAtarian1 wrote: ON topic: Can we see some mechanism pictures. I'm cuious to see if it's got any similarity to the Helicpter cube. I believe it does because both of them have 12 axises of rotation in the form of the verticies of a cubeoctahedron, which coincidentally is the dual solid of the Rhombic Dodecahedron. It is also the same basis used for the Helicopter Cube.

Hmm, odd--I get the same error when I click on the link too! I've fixed the typo, it was supposed to be a link Adam's Helicopter cube, and now it is. Odd... And also on topic; of course Toru's mechanism has a bunch in common with the Helicopter cube mechanism--I said as much in the original post Recall; "...it is to the Helicopter / Bevel cube what the Pyraminx Crystal / Brillic is to the Megaminx." I'll leave some mystery for you, but I promise that that statement alone tells you virtually everything about how Toru works. From a mechanism point of view, anyway. Oooh, mystery! However, I promise that I will post some pictures as well, hopefully quite soon. Cheers!

Aww so ther is no DMB. Anyway. I see where you are getting at with the Toru:Bevel Cube as Brillic:Megaminx. Wow that is one crazy structure.

You have really amazing ideas, Drizzle. I can't wait for the video! One of the most fascinating aspects about this puzzle is the type of underlying mechanism needed to allow the center pieces to move relative to one another unlike a regular rubiks' cube where the center squares are in a fixed position. I think Drizzle is alluding to this idea when bringing up Adam's excellent SuperX and Helicopter cubes, where the mechanism necessary is a sort of "puzzle within a puzzle" approach. Bear in mind that this isn't the same as making a Slim Tower or even a 3x4x4, which is essentially just an extension of the puzzle inside. This is more akin to the mechanism for the SuperX that Adam has already posted, but at a higher level of complexity. In any case, this thread is legendary.

Hi Awesome puzzle!! Will anyone make a version that has the shape of a cube and the movements suggested by the first picture? I would love that even more actually This would be a combination of some already existing mods - but in a novel way of course - Per

I have 2 questions: 1) Is it correct that the Toru rotates as a 3x3x5 mechanism extended at all sides + helicopter moves on the corners? 2) Can we then assume that the Rua puzzle will turn as a 2x2x4 extended on all sides + Helicoper cube? Is this then the same, like the rombiminx/ Rhombic Dodecaedre )+ helicopter corners?) 2) Drizzle, is there a reason that you completed this Toru puzzle before the (mechanically simpler) Rua one? Do you run into space restrictions with the latter?

Yes, yes there is.
The problem is is that my camera only takes nice videos in natural sunlight, and with it being the dead of winter here, the sun has not been out for some days now. As soon as I get a sunny day, I'll make a video.
Cheers!

on gelatinbrain's applets, is this equivalent to 3.3.5? (except of course the computer puzzle isn't jumbleable) edit: sorry, that's what I get for posting and _then_ reading the thread. I thought I had editted this post but apparently I didn't

OK, have a vdeo!I accidentally mixed it up the other day and now have no clue how to make it right, although I have now almost got it back to an ordered state--4 of the small triangles are still are in the wrong orientation... Either way, the video shows the mixed up state, the "jumbling", and the less than perfect motion of the thing, which I'll be able to fix in the next iteration. And since my neighbor was running a chainsaw while I did this, I put some music in the background instead. Enjoy some NZ music!

Spelling mistake fixed, thanks! Well, it would seem that I forgot to lubricate the thing--a few drops and the motion is now great! For the sake of comparison, I would rate the motion / frequency of jams on this puzzle as a little better than the new megaminxes being sold at cube4you once they are lubricated--and those are very acceptable in my opinion But yes, more will be produced--that's not in question at all. How many, and when I'll be selling them is a bit of a question mark though. Now, if only someone would make a solution for this thing...

I think you have a great puzzle! If this was on GelatinBrain I would give it a go. I have tried 3.3.5 a little bit and have gotten about this far in seven minutes. Attachment:
PuzzlePic2.JPG [ 61.64 KiB | Viewed 2448 times ]
I will try a little more later on 3.3.5 after I finish the solution to the Half Chop. I wish I had this puzzle and I can't wait to see Rua. Cool video, it is a little smaller than I had thought too, otherwise Toru is awesome!

Honestly it looks like a pattern-maker's dream, but it also makes me feel a bit insecure. What if I couldn't master it? What if I couldn't control it? What if it became my master? Oooh, scary...!

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...
Even better "in the flesh"!
And either you have HUGE hands.... or
so small for such a complex puzzle. It turns pretty well too. I can't begin to imagine how to solve it.
Congratulations again, and thanks for the video.

Uh, the gelatinbrain applet doesn't support jumbling, and this particular puzzle can hit only a miniscule fraction of all of its possible states using the non-jumbling moves. So unfortunately we don't have a particularly good simulator for this one.
