Very cool build, even if it has been done before.

Great mod! On most of your mods, do you use plastic sheet to make the pieces?

i didn't use plastic sheets on my first builds (which is why they were my first builds, lol) but yeah i use plastic sheet on all of my builds, now.
as to the whole chinese knockoff thing, again. i just want the best possible turning puzzle i can have. so i chose this megaminx as a base.

Nice job! I finally get how the build works now, I'm not sure why it wasn't obvious to me.

Well done. Very well crafted. It will look great stickered.
That's a hell of a lot of pieces!
I would love to play with that puzzle when it is finished!

Just looking at the first image, I never would have guessed it was made from one of those cruddy knock off Megaminxes.
Fantastic looking build. I can't wait to see it all finished, stickered and what not.
Welcome back. It's good to see you again.

p|astic, you are a master with plastic sheet. I can't even imagine being that accurate making everything by hand. Well done!

It's great to see you make a new mod, p|astic. You are a master.
So, how are your other 2 mods going.

love you too rick. no big deal on the mental block, bro. TheAtarian1 wrote: So, how are your other 2 mods going. i have a 4x5x5 in the works, and a skewb triakis tetrahedron which i'm about to completely tear apart. i can't get the cuts right (by eye) and i'm not good enough with math to calculate it out, so... i think i'm going to leave the 4x5x5 unfinished, because Aleh's masterpiece should hold the throne alone. and i'm gonna do all skewb platonic solids as practice. i've been inactive too long. i've been itching to build something. you guys ever get that way?

Great building pictures P|astic! Thanks for sharing! It looks like everyone (apart from me ) produces perfect pieces or the right proportions first time and just puts puzzles together! Not fair! I sometimes measure it wrong or cut down too much etc. hence it takes me a long time to make good pieces. However I am learningsomething new with building each puzzle. Vadim

I'm confused how you made the corner pieces? Did you cut down the original corers, and put a plastic plate over the top?

Have you some details on the sheeting? How thick is it for example. Where can you get it? (I've been using 2.2mm fibreglass - the chamfering is a real drag though and the painting is an extra task - but I would prefer to use black sheeting in future)

Looks like black polystyrene sheet. Anthony Greenhill uses it as does Tony Fisher. I use it as well for quite a few projects outside of puzzle making. The thin sheets are great when you need to bend the plastic into curves and other custom shapes. http://chrono.org/vendread4.jpgThe "shield" on the left leg is two pieces of polystyrene sheet that were separately curved, trimmed, and lightly sanded to match. The result was a completely seamless plastic sculpt made from 1mm polystyrene sheet. Thicker sheets in the 2+ mm range are great for making larger flat puzzle pieces and adequately sturdy for most constructs.

the color scheme will be god knows what, lol. i only have 6 colors, so i'm off to find more vinyl tonight. this took forever (relatively) to build. i hate cutting too much, and thinking "if i leave this one piece it won't hurt; bull, if you let one piece slide, then the whole thing will be terrible" then completely starting over on the piece. BLAH as for the plastic sheet, i buy from mcmaster. they have EVERYTHING. it's 1/8" (EDIT. 1/16" OOPS! sorry) abs sheet. they have a variety of thickness up to 4", and bars, rods, disks and tubes, too. and joey, that's exactly how i did the corners.

OOPS i lied, it's 1/16th inch

i have a new respect for Tyler after stickering this thing. how many stickers does a gigaminx have? this had 140 and i feel like my eyes are bleeding. higher resolution response to below yeah, i really should have painted... always something to improve

Yes, several people have made it. Tony Fisher, Jurgen Brandt, are the two that I know of.
