I am intrigued. Well done!
How hard is it to turn the center circles?

Very very nice.
The biggest challenge would be the fact that the core is "blocked" on 'half' of the moves, so matching up all of the centers is a bit harder.

I'm not so sure that would be a concern. Having one half blocked just makes sure that all the internal grooves are aligned and that doesn't stop the CenterCenters from moving like we would expect them to.

Getting the rights to using the Rubik's Mech will be hard.....?
How have you managed to get the outside section of the centres to stay in?

I'm not sure, but i'm guessing that there is some track that they attack to in the center pieces that are attached to the mechanism.

The simplest way to make it work would be to make the new cut in the shape of a cone. Everything overlaps the next thing out, so it all holds together.
Ton came close to this design a while back :

It is close, but the corners are glued together, so it can't turn like a 4x4.

one of the pictures seems to suggest that the circles on a face will rotate with their corresponding inner slices? is this true? in which case I am even more clueless as to how you pulled it off!
but if that's how it works, then that truly is a 2x2x2 inside a 4x4x4! isn't this like the "supercube" (not the sticker variation) that has been thought of a few times before, that is, putting a 2x2 in a 4x4 or a 3x3 in a 5x5?
wow.

Huh? which corners? I think I see what you're talking about, but I'm not sure how that would keep it from turning like a 4x4.

Ton's mod was ultimately to have a 2x2x2 with 4x4x4 centers, so the outer layers wouldn't be functional.

A little bit of history on these kind of cube modifications.
The first modification of a 444 creating an ‘axle’ by rounding the 4 centre pieces of a 444 Master Cube was reported in the article section of this forum, see:
http://twistypuzzles.com/articles/building-2x2x6.shtml
This lead to 224 and 226 puzzles. The latter, however, with cubies of ‘unequal’ dimensions.
Ton’s mentioned proposal is a further development of this, but I believe that Ton hasn’t actually build the proposed puzzle yet.
Another further development was proposed and also made by Tony Fisher. It was published in CFF 65 page 44 (November 2004). By exception (normally articles of CFF are not to be copied; NKC-members can order back-issues), a scan of this article is copied below. It shows that Tony created two additional new puzzles. By means of a second circle at the outside of the puzzle he created a 226 with correctly proportioned cubies. By means of another second circle, a sliding groove mechanism and by modifying several pieces he created a 446 puzzle.
Using these ideas and by creating an additional ‘second’, slightly smaller circular groove underneath the edge parts in a somewhat similar way as was explained by Tony for his 446, I believe that it should be possible to build and hold the pieces as in the beautiful design by Daqing Bao.
Whether or not it was made in such a way, the puzzle by Daqing Bao is amazingly nice.
Geert

Wow! Those are some very nice puzzles! Not very many people have managed to make a Master Pyraminx or a SuperX!
(EDIT: at first I mistook the superX for a bevel cube, which I tend to do alot actually...)

Hey, that 4x4x4 thing is pretty cool. I have no idea how it's done but I feel like I could figure something out if I thought about it.
Is that a 6x6x6 there? How in the world did you make that?

Welcome to the forums (no one had said it yet). Wow. It might be a 2x2 with
the plates of a rubik's 4x4 (the ones on the core) glued on and the circular
centers glued onto that. I don't know if this would work but it's just an idea.

My rough translation until Kirby shows up:

Oh! I think I have an idea in that case.
Take a regular Rubik's 4x4x4 and convert the core itself into a 2x2x2 cube. Then the new (inner) centers are pieces that are permanently connected to the core, and the old (outer) centers are the same pieces with a bunch of plastic removed.
However it's done, it's awesome!

I'm making a big assumption that those mods aren't totally hand-made.
By the way, chris, your translation is good enough.

It has often been remarked that higher order cubes would not be problematic if the outer layer was allowed to thicker than the inner layers. It is clear that this is what was done in this case.

Yeah, that is pretty easy to see. What I was really asking was how you would go about actually fabricating the pieces for a 6x6x6 yourself, especially if you are only making one...

why would you want it by eastsheen? we know that EVENTUALLY we will get them from olypicubes and that theyre amazing quality. imagine the eastsheen one. i would rather wait and have the olympicube .

I tried the pillowed 7, and believe me you don't really notice it.

Really Awesome puzzle though i think i get the concept of it:
So imagine the mech of a eastsheen 2x2 wit hthe mech of a rubik 4x4 cut into eight corner pieces and secured onto the mefferts mech, still nto sure how the centers circles work but i think that i can be achieved thru something liek that

Could somebody please do me a favor and post the pictures from that forum on here, because for some reason my computer cannot format them or something, and all I see is this logo thing for every picture. When I click on them, I download a file of the ASP variety and my computer cannot recognize it. Can anyone help me or post the pictures here?
