Ever since I first saw Anthony Greenhill's excellent Square-1-II I've been intrigued by it. It took me a while to figure out how he did it, but I think I know it now. I decided to build a much simpler 2-layer Square-1, basing it on a 2x2x2 core. I've been working on a few time-consuming mods the last months. Coupled with the fact that I hardly have any spare time as it is, I really needed a 'quick' build. Take a Square-1 and a mini 2x2x2. Remove the stickers of both (or don't of course, if you're fine with the colour scheme of your Square-1) and disassemble the Square-1. Glue the pieces together so you get 8 pieces with 90 degree corners. Keep in mind that the 4 pieces that go on top, are mirrored from the 4 pieces that will form the bottom layer. Use a saw to remove the excess material, so the 2x2x2 will fit. I don't have pictures of that, but if you think about it, I'm sure you understand what I mean. Use 3 pieces of cardboard to position the first piece on the 2x2x2. Don't spill any glue. Take enough time to let it dry. I use the cardboard for the first 5 pieces. The 3 remaining pieces are easy to put on. I use Adobe Illustrator and my Roland Stika plotter to make stickers. Et voila, you have yourself a poor man's 2-layer Square-1. Unfortunately the 2x2x2 core gave up after a while. Oh well, it was fun building it. And we still have the pictures Thomas

What I would like to see is that you have to rotate the layer 30 degrees to align the pieces before turning them like a normal 2x2.
Very clever though. I had been wondering where you had wandered off to Thomas. Great to see you're still building.

I don't think any fully functional 2-layer Square-1 exists.
But to my knowledge, Anthony Greenhill's version is not based on a 2x2x2. I'm almost sure that in his design 4 adjacent pieces on one layer are fused. The other layer has 8 seperate pieces.

Thomas
What's about if you had used the rails from the middle layer and fit it into the small 2x2's upper and bottom layers? You cut each of these rails into 2 parts and them fit them into each 2x2 piece. Then assemble the square1.
You would get a 2 layer Square1, fully functional and twisting from two directions, instead of from just one.
That's what I tried long time ago, but since my cutting skills and accuracy was not good enough the project misserably failed.... .
Your ones are perfect, so why don't make a try?
Am I wrong?
By the way, very proffesional finish the one you got with this recent mod.
Congratulations!

You're not quite wrong and you're not quite right.
It wouldn't be fully functional but it would be closer. To keep the rails from getting lost inside the puzzle some pieces would need to be attached to them. To prevent other misalignment it would be better to use a 2x2x1 than a 2x2x2. (Which would reduce the pieced needed to be attached to rails.)
The end result would be a more functional layer square one, there would only be two pieces permanently attached to each other instead of four, but it still wouldn't be fully functional.
