Post subject: My New Puzzle: Lau's Tetrakaidecahedron Posted: Thu Jun 21, 2007 7:19 pm |

Hey guys/gals,
I just finished stickering my newest puzzle creation. (see photos below) It is a shape variant of a standard 3x3x3 cube with truncations on all corners. The resulting polyhedra is a tetrakaidecahedron (aka tetradecahedron, but I think tetrakaidecahedron sounds better ).
I don't think anyone has ever made a puzzle like this, so I decided to give it a special name. I was inspired by Josef Trajber and "Trajber's Octahedron" and I decided to name this puzzle "Lau's Tetrakaidecahedron."
I like this puzzle very much and I do plan on making at least one more for sale on ebay, that is if you guys are interested.
As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, please post about them.
Caleb Lau

Nice job--it looks great! I had actually considered making this object as well, but it seems you beat me to it
Oh well, I better come up with something original then...

It is nice to see a new shape mod on this board, and not just posts on posting too much...
Keep up the good work!
This looks like one of Jürgen Brandt's ideas that he sketched out, but never made into a puzzle. His only had the cuts coming from one side and not 2 opposite sides like this one. If this description is as confusing to you as it is to me, the sketch can be found here.

Judging by the shape of the yellow and white faces it looks like the stickers would be no different there than what is on a rubik's cuboctahedron puzzle. The other sides of course are a different matter with their deeper truncation.
In fact, if one were so inclined, one could take a cuboctahedron and perform wedge cuts on eight faces and make one of these puzzles after some proper filling.
Nicely done, Caleb.

I love this shape too!
I really thought all 3x3x3 trancations have been exploited by now...
Obviously not!
Geat mod Caleb! Well done!

Thanks for all the great replies so far. It's this kind of stuff that keeps me going.
As for a guide, this puzzle was more in prototype phase and it functions perfectly, but there are some issues with the plastic that I want to fix. I'll make I guide when I make another one...a better one!
Now I just need to finish my 3x3x4
