OK, had some time to kill, and a couple cubes saying "do something with me!" to me. So I did.
Now, meet this thing!
Now, I *know* I have seen this design elswhere on these forums, but I couldn't find it now, so I can't give thanks for the design idea. But I also can't take props for coming up with it either. Oh well.
The motion on this item is smooth as silk, and the finish is quite good. The stickers kind of stink, though, but that is due to the fact that all the curved edges meant I freehand cut every last one of them.
The plan is to figure out a template for the stickers, redo that, and place it on the auction block, so as to spread the joy and all!
Cheers!

Very nice puzzle! How did you plan out the cuts and such for the pieces? I like the "rounded" pyraminx look.

Aleh made the first one. The post is here.
Nice job on this puzzle, and good luck with future projects. There are several very interesting 3x3x3 mods that have not been made yet...

This was made by a 3x3 cube? or a pyraminx?

Ah-ha! Thanks then to Aleh for the design inspiration! (although I think I cut mine a little deeper than his)
As for a video, I'll see what I can do, but no promises. And yes, it's just a regular 3x3 with some filler and cutting. But not so much of a "plan" when cutting up--there is basically only one way to do this
Cheers!

A similar but distinctly different version would be the Triakis Tetrahedron.
A 4 color scheme could be used, making it very interesting. (I think there is a 3x3x3 sticker variation that accomplishes the same thing.)

Yeah, I thought I'd be clever and mix it up. Bad idea.
It gets very confusing quite quickly, owing to the shape changes, and center orientation is important, while corner orientation is not. At least on four corners. Bah!
Anyhow, as requested, I made a quick video of me struggling with the confusing alignment of this puzzle. However, I cannot seem to upload it (probably due to crappy NZ ISP...) So, if anyone really wants it, pm me with an email address and I'll send it to you on the condition that you post it here for me
Cheers!

I believe the inspiration puzzle you'r thinking of is Aleh's "Kite" cube. or atleast i think thats what he called his version of the mastermorphix

Scott, Kite Cube is made from Ufo, not from 3x3x3. This topic has links to Aleh's original mod.

Yeah, no ufo here--that's one of the coming-soon mods though. And of course the discount dino cubes are still on the todo list...

Hmm, what if you made one of these from a Skewb? It would have to be quite a bit larger than the original puzzle, but it should be very feasable. That would be a very tricky puzzle.

Thanks, cubester, for loading the video! I tried to simply stick it on this thread as an attachment with no success--the flash movie idea is much better!
But as for the skewb idea, wouldn't this idea on a skewb just lead to this?
Cheers!

Yeah, I guess it would. Oh well. It's not as interesting as I thought it would be.
What about turning a Dino Cube into a bulgy tetrahedron?
