Post subject: My latest mod: Cubic Megaminx (prototype) Posted: Sun Feb 25, 2007 7:48 am |

I wanted to build a cube version of the Megaminx. Or at least, as cubic as possibe. As I'm not at all satisfied with the quality of this puzzle, I merely consider it a prototype. The problems started when I decided to use one of those cheap Chinese models. Boy was I wrong. These are utter crap! I should have invested in a proper Megaminx. Cutting away 6 of the 'tops' was okay. But then I had to repair 18 pieces with Apoxie Sculpt.. And all the pieces, including all centers, had to be painted. I now regret that I even continued. I don't think I enjoyed one minute of building it. I cut the stickers by hand, because I didn't feel the need to have rounded corners on the stickers. Done. I've also started building another version, with even deeper cuts. But as you by now understand, I'll probably won't finish this one. Not with this crap Megaminx! And I want to try to build Jurgen Brandt's design of a cubic Megaminx, but then with the regular 6 BOY colours. Thomas

funny thing is, earlier today i was just thinking about how cool it would be to make a completely cubical mod of the megaminx i wanna say "great minds think alike" but since i cant build anything myself that saying falls right there

Absolutely fabulous!
Thomas, did you do all these projects at the same time?

I'd like to see what you can do with a Meffert's Minx.
I guess you'll have to wait for the restock in May too.
I like how the second prototype is looking.
BTW: Have you thought about sanding down the bumps that lock the pieces in place? It would at least make it turn a bit better that way.
Also, on Jurgen Brandt's Mod, I don't really see the pattern on how he cut it. How is that like a cube?

Vadim wrote: Absolutely fabulous! Thomas, did you do all these projects at the same time? Vadim I work on different projects simultaneously. Sometimes the Apoxie Sculpt or paint has to dry for a few days, sometimes I lose interest for a while in a certain project, but usually I want to begin on a new puzzle, before all the others are done. I'm really working on 10-15 projects now. And my sketchbook is full of new fun ideas. It's really one step forward, two steps back xcool wrote: Have you thought about sanding down the bumps that lock the pieces in place? It would at least make it turn a bit better that way. Yeah, I did sand down the bumps. That makes this Megaminx a little better. But not much. xcool wrote: Also, on Jurgen Brandt's Mod, I don't really see the pattern on how he cut it. If you look at the edges of Jurgen's version, you see they are like the edges of a cube. If you'd also sand down the remaining bumps, pieces start falling off.

Thankyou. I see it now. It's very clever.
I'd love to see your creations with nice Megaminx's.
Despite being a horrible core (not your fault) it looks very clean and even. Good job.

 It's not Tony Fisher's 9x9 (1x1x9).

Now wait a minute... if a megaminx has corners and edges and centers, wouldn't a cube version of it just be a normal rubik's cube?

Wow! You managed to transform a megaminx to a real puzzle gem!
Also, after changing to weaker springs and trimming a bit some inside parts, the core can still be used for good megaminx play. I prefer mine the way I did it (it did require a lot of tedious work though) and have stopped using Mefferts. But I am not sure if it is good enough for complex mods!

a normal rubik's cube rotates in 6 different ways... a megaminx rotates in 12 different ways. megaminx's (or atleast the shape of one) is refered to as a "dodecahedron". cube = 6, dodecha = 12.
As far as mechanism though, megaminx is almost identical to the rubik's cube.

(sorry if off topic...) There will indeed be a restock of at least Skewb Ultimates.
I emailed Mr Meffert back in November about them and he told me for sure they would be restocked in May. It's just an assumption that everything else will be stocked as well.

Hmmm..... but we all know why you should never assume....
