Yup your right. I meant to say that. Thanks for correcting it Tony. The heat must be playing with my mind again.

Face turning octahedral designs have existed since the 80's there just hasn't been any production of one.
See Rubiks Octahedron 1982
here
Karl Rohrbach's Magic Octhedron 1983
here
Clarence W. Hewlett's Magic Octhedron 1984
here
David E. Pitcher's Octahedral Puzzle Aparatus 2005
here
The major difference with this design is the addition of the center triangle, which is much like the difference between a pyraminx and a halpern-meyer pyramid.
Sorry but like I said I was starting to work on writing a patent for exactly this puzzle

can't you still patent it? i know that okamato has made it first, but i doubt he is going to patent it. i mean i could be completely wrong, but its worth a shot, just dont name it the same thing. And is your design the exact same? i believe he modified a rainbow cube, but yours could be completely different, so give it a try.

I would have to discuss that with him and see if he would protest also my design is definitely quite similar my core is custom but that would all depend I'm no expert on patent law but I will discuss it with him and see what he says

Well I e-mailed him with a request for some form of co-operation in this if he turns me down though there is probably little I can do. Well I hope he's willing to allow this, and that I'm not automatically excluded due to his posting of a working model with his name on it.

you can't forget Jürgen Brandt's face turning octahedron
http://twistypuzzles.com/articles/spotl ... rgen.shtml
Scroll down a little.
Seroiusly though Whack, what are you going to do with a patent anyway? I mean he did beat you to the punch on a custom puzzle you wanted to "own" but there's a million more designs to go. Plus this mechanism has been done to death in production anyway, Dino cube, Rainbow cube, Braintwist, Jackpot/Platypus/Tripod.
I would be very interested in a mini 4x4x4 or anything with 20 axis if you're looking for something to design.
By the way,I love the Dino Octa it's very beautiful!
Is it just me or does right now seem like a "Puzzle Renaissance"? Amazing and beautiful puzzles seem to be coming out of the woodwork everywhere.

skeneegee:
well he beat me to the punch on manufacture but not neccesarily design. And as far as ownership it was more the legal recognition I was after than the ownership. I also wanted to attempt to market it to the general public not just the wealthy puzzle collector elite. And I figured one way to do that without running as huge a risk of losing a ton of money would be through "ownership". If this does not seem a worthwhile reason to you I'm sorry but it did and still does to me.
