Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Square Mixup was proposed by Krystian Wilisowski. Whereas the Square One puzzle allows only 180-degrees moves for the central square, and the 90-degrees mid-turn position is only shown for photogenic purposes, the 90-degrees move is actually functional in Square Mixup. In that position, all 24 sliding pieces are linked in one long daisy chain.

Watch the YouTube video of the original version.

Buy the puzzle at my Shapeways Shop.

Enjoy!

P.S. Tony picked Square Mixup at Dutch Cube Day, but fails to demonstrate the special mixup move, see Tony's YouTube video. A Tony Fisher fail?

I've been watching that one with interest in the DCD thread!

My first question was going to be `Is it going to eat me?` and I still think `Probably`!

I would never have guessed it's movement without the video  .. It's a Square1-Orbit-hybrid
Love it.

Cheers,
Burgo.

This is an amazing puzzle! When this thing is scrambled, it looks really challenging, which brings up a good question: are you able to solve your own puzzles? I've always wondered about this ever since the over the top was completed. I think that some of the other forum members might want to know.

The movement reminds me of the orb puzzle! I can't believe how smooth it is.

So who is the one to blamed for breaking the rules of geometry? The guy who proposes it ore the guy who implements it?
I could play with it the evening before DCD and it still frightens me.

Well, I've got this idea after seeing your Silver Orb puzzle. I would say that both use sphericon-related solids as a base geometry.
And I agree the puzzle turns perfectly.

This is the picture/animation that Krystian presented to me.

I changed the outside look a bit and added the mechanism. I was too surprised by the smooth movement of the pieces.

Fantastic, I love how the pieces switch between different axes of rotation at the equator. It makes me think that a whole new class of twisty puzzles could be made with more axes...

Very nice. Here is the comment that I just made at YouTube.

I'm going to say you called it Mixup because it allows for turns to be made at the midway point of a normal Square-1 deep-cut turn. Just like the Mixup Cube allows for turns to be made at the midway point of a normal 3x3x3 slice turn. Correct? Also in the video you state that "the prototype isn't perfect yet". Does this mean a version 2 is in the works?

I can't say I'm totally surprised as I've seen this at Oskar's Shapeways shop for sometime. However I clearly haven't been watching close enough as there is something there now which does surprise me.

Carl

Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

I made an improved version of Square Mixup. First of all, the cuts are now straight for better looks. Secondly, I added a hidden groove to keep the pieces better aligned such that they cannot turn in place.

Watch the YouTube video of the improved version.
Buy the puzzle at my Shapeways Shop.
Check out the photos below.

Enjoy!
