Amidst the busyness of the summer I managed to construct a new puzzle transformation called Triserpentinx (try-sir-pen-tinx).

I began to truncate a Megaminx three years ago into a shape that didn't look all that impressive, so I set it to the side until now. I noticed some symmetries along sets of three sides of the shape that could be rounded into single faces and decided that with these adjustments, it would look much more interesting.

All of the new cuts were created solely with black Apoxie Sculpt and a sanding block. I slowly worked each side, disassembling and reassembling along the way while increasing the sandpaper grit, until all of the pieces were evened out and consistently shaped.

Stickering the curved surfaces was probably the hardest part. I made a rough sticker template by taping paper to each unique surface and tracing with a pencil along the cuts. After copying the paper template into Solidworks I cut test labels out of cardstock with my sticker plotter, and following about seven sketch revisions (apparently the template wasn't very accurate) the tests seemed of acceptable quality.

I used gold and silver Oracal vinyl for the two triangular faces, and Meffert's style neon textured vinyl for the six curved faces.

A key part of this design's geometry is that the curve is symmetrical along each central edge. This is demonstrated in the picture below on the right:

The symmetry is related to the fact that, if the curves were extended outward to be flat, the puzzle would take the shape of a Trigonal Antiprism (AKA Octahedron).

Solving isn't all that different than a Megaminx; the only distinguishing factors in the solve are all orientation-related:
The small triangles have no orientation.
The square edges have no orientation.
    Every center HAS orientation.
Incidentally there are no identical parts which leaves most of the difficulty in the process of identifying each piece during the solve. Some parts along the curved edges can only be distinguished by shape.

The name is essentially a portmanteau of "Trigonal", "Serpentine", and "Megaminx". If anyone has other name suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.

Yeah my parents don't trust me with tools either. The mods I do are sticker mods. I'm happy with that.
