Calvin, you said 40x40x90mm i'm pretty sure you meant 60x60x90. Am I right ?

I finally got one today, not the one I ordered from Calvin on the 4th (that one just finally shipped today) but one I got from a US based eBay reseller. My first reaction is a bit of a disappointment. The puzzle is dripping with smelly wet oily lube. It is as bad as the 4x5x5, you really have to wash your hands after even just holding the puzzle. Some of it even got under some of the stickers. I am planning on replacing the stickers anyway so that is not too big of a deal but I will have to disassemble the puzzle and soak it in some water with Dawn.

Are they all this way or is this oily lube something that the eBay reseller added? Will we ever have the ability to buy unlubed and unstickered DIY kits?

Does anyone have the checkered version? From what I can see, it will always keep a checkered pattern in the cuboid shape.

I do and it doesn't.

A bit of an update:

I pulled off all of the stickers and have a better idea of what is going on. The cubies are all made of two pieces and some of the seams are under stickers, like with some of the inner pieces on a V-Cube. There is so much oil in this puzzle that it got into the cubies and seeped through the seams and got under the stickers. Not only am I going to have to take the puzzle apart to clean it out but I'm also going to have to take the cubies apart as long as they are not glued together (I haven't tried yet).

My original plan was to eventually buy six of them for sticker mods. I currently have one more on its way to me (the original one I ordered). But this is just too much work so unless I can buy them unlubed I'm not going to bother getting any more.

Calvin, Tom, please don't do this with any future puzzles!

Don't you know that that stupid greasy lube is a must for all puzzles! If you don't have it your puzzle won't work properly. Good luck there!

Sorry about that.
We have asked the assembly staffs to put "just enough" lube on the cube.
But, it is always hard to tell how much is "just enough". So, do have some of them having extra lube.

Roxanne did said very right, the cubes can function pretty well with "just enough" or extra lubed; while, most of the cubes will not function properly if no lube.

PS: we are receiving many orders recently, my staffs had missing a few orders by mistake. So, a few of orders have been post late. Sorry again.

Hope you understand.
Thanks. :)

I cleaned out all the lube and reassembled it without using any. And it actually moves just as well if not better than it did when it was dripping with oil. This is a well built puzzle and in my opinion doesn't need any lube.

Anyway, by request I took a few pictures of the reassembly:

Assembly this puzzle is huge work.
Tony tooks half hour, our normal staff tooks around an hour.
How long you need to assembly this puzzle ?

It took me about 35 minutes including taking the pictures (not counting putting on the stickers). It really wasn't too difficult since I didn't use any lube so the pieces didn't slide around too much and I kept the screws and springs tight enough to hold the hidden layer pieces in place.

I got my copy of this puzzle today.
I just want to say that I think its a very nice product! It's very stable and smooth turning. Cut's corners on every cut too.
Couldn't ask for more :)

This looks like a great puzzle from the reviews I've seen. I am thinking of buying a cuboid puzzle (since I don't own one), and I was wondering whether I should get the 4x4x6 or the 3x4x5. Any suggestions?
(In my opinion, I think the 4x4x6 looks cooler, but I'm asking for others' opinions).

No, I haven't tried that yet. Or would a bathroom stall count?

I can really recommend you the 4x4x6. I dont own the mass produced 3x4x5 but I am very sure the 4x4x4 is a much better product. From what I heard the 3x4x5 pops some and is rather unstable where the 4x4x6 is just perfect.

Hi all

Someone asked me to make a little unboxing video of my 4x4x6 when it arrived. In case anyone else is interested, it's at http://youtu.be/3VWNZHccob4. It's my first attempt at an unboxing video so I probably missed loads of vital information that people want to know. I probably also sound like an imbecile at various points. Anyway, I'm very pleased with the puzzle and can't wait to play with it.

I received mine a few minutes ago.
I'm very pleased with it. Out of the box it turns well and it is really close to Tom's Shapeways original which is one of the best turning puzzles in my possession. (Tom assembled it for me. Tom said this a lot of work and probably it is the same for Calvin's as well.)

Congratulations to both of you, Tom and Calvin! :D

@MrSingingPizza: The mass-produced 4x4x6 turns certainly better than the mass-produced 3x4x5.
After breaking it in, the 3x4x5 it is not so bad.
I can recommend both as a solving challenge. Personally I find the 3x4x5 less regular and therefore a bigger challenge. Both are great puzzles :)

My Calvin's Puzzle - TomZ 4x4x6 Cuboid has arrived in Northern Canada and I am delighted with it! It is smaller than I expected, but it makes perfect sense for the cubies to be smaller as the cuboid becomes larger. The long side is the same length as the long side of my TomZ 3x4x5. It turns well out of the box and there is no evidence of the excessive lubricant issue that was mentioned earlier in this thread. I can't wait to try out my ideas for solving it!

Having solved it a few times and (obviously) turning it lots, I am more and more impressed with it. This is a far better experience than the 3x4x5. I still haven't lubed it yet but it's turning wonderfully. It's well worth the money!

BUMP, I have checked with Dave that it is OK, though.

I can support rline's positive opinion:

One optical issue I did not like so much: some production marks are recognizable if usual stickers are applied.
I do not know, if this is a general issue, but I suppose it is. I have solved this using Cubesmith 4x4x4 tiles. I want to show some photos (you can click on them to enlarge them) and if you have got the Calvin/TomZ 4x4x6 and you want to make a good puzzle optically perfect, you might like the idea:
Image
A year ago, I have got the original Shapeways puzzle from Tom van der Zanden, assembled and stickered by himself. I have maintained the original Calvin's colour scheme when I put the tiles on the mass-produced version:
Image
Tom's original with the stickers is to the right.
I know that some like Cubesmith tiles and some don't. In case you are not familiar with Cubesmith tiles, you can have a look here.
I like these tiles whenever the plastic of a puzzle shows serious production marks which are not hidden by stickers (e.g. this was the case for my three sets of V-Cubes. They look just wonderful with the tiles.)
BTW, tiles and tiles are not the same: Meffert's tiles are quite thick and they fall off very often. Meffert's gave up using them years ago. Cubesmith tiles are not much thicker than ordinary stickers and they last forever.
Here is a comparison of tiles and stickers in a closeup:
Image
As you can see on the left side, stickers on Shapeways puzzles show the grainy structure of the WSF/BSF material. (some people do not like Shapeways puzzles either). Tiles will hide the grainy, bumpy structure, if you want. For the time being, I'll stick with the original stickers, just because they are original and personally applied by Tom.
Optically, I'm very fond of the mass-produced, tiled version :)
BTW, the turning is almost identically good!!!
And this says much about Calvin's quality: I think Tom's original is the best of all my cuboids.

The shapeshifting makes it a very attractive puzzle:
Image
Which is which?

EDIT: I had to move a few puzzles with old Meffert's tiles taking some photos. Sure enough, several tiles fell off. Partially, I'm to blame myself, because I glued such tiles at old Megaminx (what is the plural of ~minx again?) many years ago. But the worst is a Pyraminx Crystal with tiles (glued on by Meffert's). I guess that I'm close to 100% of the tiles which I have glued newly with superglue. I'm glad that I have not lost one, so far.

When I'm recommending tiles, I'm clearly NOT referring to Meffert's tiles
Cubesmith tiles are completely different!
