Now that I've allready posted a new puzzle today I might just as well post another.

So I present you the third 5x5x7 made.
I designed the puzzle in January 2010, it was later printed by Geert Hellings. In June 2010 Karl-Heinz Diekmann made yet an other one, this is when the 5x5x7 was first made public.
Before Karl-Heinz showed his puzzle I got a set of masters from Geert so I could cast one for myslef. This didn't want to work, pieces just got messed up and the mold still sits were i left it 7 months ago.

When I was asked to make a 4x4x2 i thought, when I'm getting stuff from shapeways I might just as well get myself that cuboid I wanted for so long.
So I took my design, made it hollow, scaled it down to 80% and renamed it to v1.5

So after almost one and a half year I finally have a 5x5x7 for myself. The only sad thing is that one of my 4x4x2 buyers reserved it before I even got it... So I guess I have to get myself one more.

One thing that did suprise me tho was how well it turns, smooth and even turning in all directions, and I haven't even siliconed it yet. And the stickers I got from Oliver Nagy just makes the experience even better.

There is a chance that you might be able to buy 5x5x7's, I havn't decided yet. Allthough sales will only be assembled puzzles from me. And if I see a 5x5x7 on shapeways, expect a call from my lawyer

I can see how your 4x4x2 works but how can this not be pillowed. It's funny that in the 4th picture the black and yellow center pieces that protrude due to the dot pattern look thicker than other layers but actually the 1st and 7th layer don't look bigger at all.

To make it clear, every single cubie is 11.2mm
There is no uneven cubie or other tricks in this puzzle, it's a true cuboid

Whoooo, is it Coboid October? a new 4x4x2, TomZ 4x5x6 and now a 5x5x7.

Will it be for sale at some point?

Nice shape-shift pics, especially the recessed center.

Since wer're in a cuboid mood, do you think a 3x5x7 is possible (with three uneven sides)?

regards, Maarten

Everything is possible, it's just a question of how ugly you want it

Maybe I'm reading far more into this then I should and I have no plans on offering a 5x5x7 on Shapeways so maybe I should keep my mouth shut... but I don't get this point of view. The concept of LxMxN cuboids has been around for what... decades? So you can't have a patent on the 5x5x7 in general? You could have a patent on the mech you used to make this one? Not sure if you do or not but even that wouldn't stop another from making their own mech and offering a 5x5x7 on Shapeways. In my view, your best means to deter others from offering a 5x5x7 on Shapeways would be to offer yours at a reasonable price there. Then what incentive would there be to offer another one? I also saw your post here. 3D cad programs and internet shops made you sad? That attitude makes me sad. They are tools that allow puzzles to be made easier today then ever before. I can see an element similiar, to say robots replacing factory workers in an auto assembly plant, being sad. But you must see these changes coming and be willing to adapt. I'm an old dog at 42 and even if I didn't embrace these changes they'd still be coming and the newer generation is picking them up and running with them. The day is coming where anyone that wants a 5x5x7 could design one and print it at there desk for peanuts in an afternoon. Granted that may be a decade or more away but its coming and it shouldn't make you sad.

Carl

You can't patent a concept, but the 5x5x7 is not a concept it is a specified puzzle that is designed by me. But I have no plans on getting a patent anyways. But in EU the designer of something gets a 3 year copyright on his creation, I got the whole thing explaned to me a while ago, but don't remember every detail.
So if someone puts a 5x5x7 on shapeways which is in EU, this will confict with my copyright and therefor not be allowed.
And I doubt you can make a good working 5x5x7 without it beeing to similar to mine.

And just for te sake of saying it 8-)

Factory has workers
Boss says, workers are expencive
Factory replaces workers with robots
Workers has no job because robot took their job
Worker can't by car because he has no job
Factory goes bust because worker couldn't afford car
Now we have no car to buy because workers was to expencive

It's an evil circle

I'm no expert on patent or copywrite law and even less so in the EU but as I understand it copywrite protects the look of something. Someone may be able to get around that by simply putting different colored stickers in the faces such that it looked different. And yes the 5x5x7 is a specific LxNxM cuboid but the concept of a specific 5x5x7 puzzle I doubt would be patentable as its a simple extrapolation from LxNxM cuboid to L=M=5 and M=7. Don't worry I have no plans on stepping on your toes. I'm just pointing out your toes may not be as well protected as you think they are.
olz wrote:

That may very well be true. I have no plans to find out.

True, there are checks and balances that keep change from happening too fast but the day always comes where you need to adapt or be left behind. Factory worker could go on and become robot repair guy and be able to aford two cars.

Due to crappy lights and a crappy camera I will have to wait for a sunny day before I can make a good video of it.

That was what I thought. If you have a dremel, you should try and use a polishing weel at low speed on the assemled puzzle. That takes some of the roughness away. This is before spraypainting it of course :)

That looks better than mass produced. I really hope that I can buy one of these shortly. Fantastic work Ola; your best creation in my opinion. :)

That depnds on how you count time, most time went to waiting for the paint to dry. And going into town to get a new can...

I spent an hour or so to clean and fix any errors due to printing, then a full evening to paint all parts layer by layer.
When all parts was painted I lubed them all and had to wait for that to dry. Then there was about 15min assembly. When it was assembled I put on a few more coats for a nice finish and ended with clear lacquer. Then we have a night for the paint to set fully and finally the day after I spent another 15min stickering it.

I don't know if that made any sence, but I think I can have one done in 24 hours, although I can make more at the same time on the same time 8-)

Does anyone know a good place to get 3x3 cores, screws and springs? I kinda need them to build more 5x5x7s
Can you still get type A parts? it's been a while since I last got 3x3 stuff.. but I designed the 5x5x7 after the type A core and screws.

Sorry OLZ, but a can’t watch any of your videos from this new video hosting service that you have. Every time that I try watching one of your videos, I get a black screen, then the screen returns back to normal. However, the video part of it is green. A still have sound, but just a green screen where your video should be. if I click on any other internet video including yours, then I get a nether black screen. Then a blue screen and my computer starts to reboot.

I made a video of this. and I put it on YouTUBE so you can see what I am talking about.

Also why is my first YouTUBE video look so bad.. I shot it with the Canon 5D mark II. so it should look good.

Thanks

Is your Computer having a bad time processing the camera or anything or is that noise nice sound of a rainy day on your window?
Anyway you aren't at all overly gently and carefull to the cuboid and still it's doing it's job perfectly. I can only salute again this puzzle is great.
The artistic score equals if not exceeds the technical score.
