The first 4x4x6 cuboid was made in 2004 by Tony Fisher, based on an idea of Geert Hellings to modify a 4x4x4 to have two extra layers. Joshua has made a very generous offer and paid me to design a 3D printable 4x4x6, and make it open source.
Joshua's initial proposal was to make the design based on the Rubik's 4x4x4, but I suggested to use a completely new mechanism since it would most likely result in a much higher quality while not raising the cost very much.
This new mechanism works really well and the result puzzle is absolutely perfect. It turns smoothly and even cuts corners some. In the video it makes a quite loud squeaking noise but it has been getting better.

VIDEO

The mechanism is a bit like that of a V-Cube and pieces in the extended layer are supported by tabs, which prevent them from lifting out. To bandage the internal mechanism, I used an approach that is very similar to the MeMyselfAndPi-mod for the 6x6x6, but the pins are replaced by much sturdier plastic protrusions. This is quite similar to how the X-Cube 4 works.

Another notable feature is that the internal mechanism is like a 4x4x4, with the edges unbandaged in to a 6x6x6. If this were not the case, the puzzle would block after shapeshifting.

The SolidWorks file is available from Thingiverse under the Creative Commons - Attribution - Share Alike license, as well as the STL files if you want to make your own. Please note that the STL files are designed for printing on Shapeways with 0.7mm walls, so they may not print well on other printers.
You can also purchase the puzzle pieces, conveniently packed in a single model, from Shapeways. It is $135 in WSF or $155 in black: 4x4x6 Cuboid DIY kit

I hope that many people will learn from my SolidWorks file and that many derivative puzzles will be made. Enjoy!

Damn you make it hard Tom... 3x4x5 or 4x4x6? Which to buy first?

As always I shall congratulate you on pure epicness. The puzzle is really cool, and I can't wait until I can buy one (perhaps at the DCD later this year?).

TomZ,

Congratulations on another great puzzle. Having the files available is an excellent educational tool.

A couple of questions about the STL files on Thingiverse: Is there a difference between the Inner layer edge A (8).STL file and the Inner layer edge B (8).STL file? Couldn't we print 8 of any Inner layer edge instead of 8 of each or maybe 4 of each? (this is getting confusing)

Also a big thank you to Joshua Bell for commissioning this puzzle to be open source!

Skarabajo.

Oh, that's a mistake on my part. They are indeed the same part. For some reason, I assumed the part was mirrored and created two separate files for it (even getting the part count wrong). I've fixed it.

This is great! I wish I had enough cash to add to my cuboid collection. The turning quality is great, and it turned out amazing! Nice job!

Tom and I have agreed to add it to my last order :D This has become a huge parcel by now! If Tom goes on like this, inventing new puzzles faster than he is able to finish orders :) , this will become the biggest Christmas parcel of my life

Last Thursday I have received my 4x4x6 together with three other TomZ puzzles.
After a family event, I have returned today and had the time to scramble an solve it.

FAN-tastic is a very good word to describe it.

Parity situations look much nicer with a shape shifting cuboid :) :

All my custom cuboids are great, this one is very likely the best. (Probably easier to solve than the 3x4x5)

EDIT: It looks nice fully scrambled, too:

For my (minimal) part, I can say: keep your eye on the Marketplace for one part of the answer!

(May be slightly delayed due to upcoming travel.)

Now that TomZ's recovering from IPP I'm looking forward to my 4x4x6.
