After using countless cubies for extensions I decided to make my own extensions with 4 strips of measured out ABS Plastic Sheet and make them into square or rectangular tubing. This also allows to extend out on puzzles that are not perfectly square. Here is a few picture of the tubing I made when building the MM-335.

You could build up from a 4x4 octahedron but I think it would be harder then building up from a half truncated 4x4. That is just my opinion though.
