Hello,

Last night I started a simple but interesting mod and now I am DONE! I do not have a name yet. Any suggestions?

Is this a centerless 3x3x3 octahedron? It's hard to tell from the angles the picture was taken.

I think this is the Dino Octahedron.

I personally think the Dinoctahedron would be suitable.

Apart from Jurgen Brandt, I wonder who's made a Face Turning Icosahedron like this.

Sorry, I certainly don't mean to take anything away, I'm just amazed that two people had identical ideas that are actually quite creative.

I'm pretty sure there's some more info to be found on this particular puzzle, apparently called simply Face-Turning Octahedron by Jürgen Brandt, the inventor/designer, but I'm not sure where to look for it.

Remarkable coincidence here :mrgreen:

It has been made by several people. Still a very nice puzzle! I intend to build this one too along with a Tetrahedron Rainbow cube.

After sanding, the puzzle moves great! I LOVE APOXIE SCULPT. Because I am new to making puzzles, this was my first time with Apoxie Sculpt and I was very impressed at the working time.

I think this is called a cornerless octahedron. It is a mod of either a Rainbow cube or a Dino Cube (if you happen to have a spare dino cube lying around, that is).

Very, very well done. I'm amazed that it turns so well, seeing as most Rainbow Cubes turn horribly.

I could imagine that if you used magnets you could make corners. That would indeed make a very interesting FTO, one that I would certainly love to see mass produced. Also a version of that to make a mass produced FTI.

Thanks! You are correct by the way. This mod was made from a rainbow cube.

I would recommend an eBay auction, as it is a very clean, professional looking puzzle, and it could sell for some.

Although it is clean, I am very nervous about selling on eBay because it is not perfect.

If I made this puzzle 100 more times I know for a fact that I would never have a PERFECT puzzle. Tough to get perfect! Need Shapeways for that.

Even if it's not a new design, it brings out the true symmetry of the Rainbow cube. besides, it has overlapping pieces!

Jurgen's was named Face-Turning Octahedron, which is taken already. However, Rainbow Cube is the same concept and thus should be the name. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There are many others of course, but I chose to highlight the ones he has built with no 3D CAD or printing. 100% hand built

There are other master builders with similar standards and reputations for hand built work (Tony, Anthony, Hidetoshi, Jin, Smaz, etc.) but it isn't easy to join that club. It is great to see some of the newer members still pursuing this direction when most of the forum seems to be moving on to CAD and printing. Nothing wrong with the new methods (they allow all sorts of new designs) but I would hate to see old fashioned craftsmanship lost to technology.
