Gear Change = Rhombic dodecahedral transformation of Uwe Meffert's factory made Gear Cube version of Oskar van Deventer's Caution Cube.

This is a tatty prototype of an idea I've had since I restickered the first Gear Cube I recieved a while back. It works pretty well and I am very pleased with it. I need to tweak the masters a little and then hopefully I can make a few to sell. The work was all done by hand using my normal techniques.
I wanted to have just one colour per side but that would've made the gears completely pointless. For that reason I have used a total of 24 colours which I am amazed I actually had. Each side is split in two so the gears must be rotated correctly. I believe the puzzle is equivalent to a fully (additionally) stickered super Gear Cube to solve.
It always remains a rhombic dodecahedron and doesn't change shape like a Gear Cube.
Without Oskar's amazing puzzle I could never have made this

Something like this had to be expected from you! Congratulations to this amazing mod. :D
You should talk to Oskar and Uwe promoting this to a Jades / Meffert's puzzle (of the year).

Wonderful as always Tony, what i really like about this puzzle is the overlapping you added to the edges (referring to the edges on the cube) the overlapping fills in the gaps and makes he puzzle look much nicer. Fantastic!

I like how those small "U"s on the Gear Cube are rectangles on the Gear Change.

I like how the "suns" aren't directly apparent when they're scrambled, it keeps its shape nicely.

As usual, a great mod and a very good looking puzzle!

I started making this mod a few weeks ago, but I got a little overconfident with the band saw, and unfortunately cut too deep. I may eventually try again, but not this summer. I have 3 projects going on at once!

Beautiful transformation, and great mod. :D I'm not sure about having so many (24!) different colours. :? Is it possible to reduce this back down to some reasonable number?

What about having 12 colours and using the six adjacent face colors to define the orientation of the "sun"? Instead of two colours on the sun, make it six or three, whatever looks nice.
Tony, if this gets ever mass-produced (I vote for it!) you could consider making it a preassembled DIY and leaving the complex stickering to us. :)

How about colouring it like the normal cube? That would give it only six colours and would probably look alright. :D

Sorry for the bad picture - I couldn't find a decent image of a Rhombic Dodecahedron and so had to edit one in paint and then add colours in GIMP (which I don't really know how to use ).

I am open to different colour schemes though I want to keep it a 'super' puzzle and to be honest I don't want to cut the suns up any more. Six colours might work but I can't figure out a pattern.

Six colors WILL work. Just map the colors of the Ultimate Cube to this. It will still be a 'super' puzzle.

Great! That looks good, I like it. I will use it on the next one.
Thanks.
