I could not resist this beauty and have ordered one from Tom.
It HAD to be black and I'll find out how much the scrambled state resembles the picture of Kelvin.

Thanks Tom!!!

No worries. Everything in my shop is still for sale, but I've disabled the sale from Shapeways for some of my models because I want to slightly modify them - but they are 'low priority' for now. But if anyone would be interested in buying one of them I'll get to work and finish my modifications.
But I'm absolutely satisfied with the Curvy Copter as is so I don't plan on disabling the sales.

Ah - good to know... Congratulations again on the puzzle! The 3x4x5 is very tempting too - but again - lack of funds at the moment... :)

Sorry, no masters:

I would be interested in collaborating with someone to make a limited edition cast version. But that person would have to have a good portfolio and be willing to make many copies of the puzzle. A bit like the Adam-Jason collaboration.

No problem! Someday I'll try it out!

A "Must have" - no question.
It will be a perfect companion, next to Adam's Heli Cube.

:D :D :D

Thank you!

Yes, really nice puzzle. Crazy paving was the first thing that came to my mind.

I got mine a few days ago, then last night I dyed it black, and today I cut the stickers. What a marvelous puzzle! It is very smooth, and very satisfying to twist. I was absently fiddling with it while working over the past few days, until finally I figured out, I think, how the jumbling works -- at least, geometrically. As in, I can create arbitrary legal jumbled shapes, and restore them.

Now that it's stickered I've started playing with it as a puzzle. I didn't find it that hard; the first solve took me 25 minutes... well, almost. See, jumbling can perform permutations that can't be undone without jumbling; I knew that, and so planned to first figure out how to solve it without jumbling. But, stupid me, I jumbled it. Oops. So, it's 25 minutes to solve to a state where I have to permute three faces pieces that can't be permuted without jumbling. Now I get to figure that out!

Again, I can't recommend this puzzle highly enough! Not only is it an elegant concept; it's perfectly implemented.

My Curvy Copter arrived today, and I couldn't resist placing it next to Adam's Helicopter cube for some pictures:

Others have said it before, but I can't help repeating it: Tom has done an outstanding job on this puzzle. Thank you very much for making such a fun, beautiful and high quality puzzle available to us, Tom! :D

I'm still waiting for mine - it is on its way.
I'll certainly get the mass-produced Helicopter cubes as well.

The qouted post below is from the thread about the white Curvy Copter.
(Both cubes are not exactly white.)

Seems to be quite similar.

As this is my first Helicopter type cube, I have not yet dared to jumble it.
Probably I'll wait with that until I have a regular Helicopter from twistystore.
I believe that it is even harder with the Curvy Copter to bring it back to a cube shape.
Solving it without jumbling was not so hard, but jumbling seems very, very confusing.

EDIT: I want to add that I like both the puzzle and the pattern very much!!

I could not resist and jumbled my Cuvy Copter.
I think it is much harder to solve it after jumbling. It took me some time to figure everything out.

I could not make this pattern without jumbling

Imagewhere the face pieces are located at the opposite sites.
It seems that an even swap of complete faces does not need jumbling while an odd number of swaps does.

Right -- with the so-called "Japanese" color scheme on mine, the pattern I showed has opposite face pieces switched. Interesting that you can get the same look without jumbling.

I found a nice transform to switch all the faces on two pairs of opposite sides. But to get the third, yes, you have to jumble.

Another interesting thing I realized is that the presence of the edge pieces adds a parity constraint on the face pieces that is not present on the regular Helicopter Cube. On the Curvy Copter, the faces live in four orbits of six pieces, which they can never leave without jumbling. Furthermore, only even permutations within these orbits are allowed, if the edge pieces are to be correctly oriented. But on a regular Helicopter, you can get odd permutations as well, as long as they still add up correctly over the whole cube. So there are Helicopter patterns reachable without jumbling that you have to jumble to get the equivalent of on the Curvy Copter.

Just received my white kit direct from Shapeways.
Can anyone advise on assembly?
eg springs, washers, surface prep (surface feels chalky), lubrication, length of screws etc.

Thanks.

I think I can

I use the screw/spring sets from 9spuzzles. I only use the springs and substitute everything else with stuff from my hardware store but that's another story. Just get two sets and you'll be set. Or if you want to source locally, you need to find M3 screws (approx. 15-20mm long), M3 washers and springs.
Assembly is fairly straightforward. Just put on two adjacent "centres", put in a face and build up from there, adding new centre pieces when you can't put in any more parts. Getting the final "layer" in is tricky, you will need to use some force. It's best to first assemble all the pieces and only then to insert the final screw.

Surface prep isn't really needed. It will give off a bit of powder initially but over time that will stop. Stickers, in my experience, stay on fine. Even though the material is really rough the puzzle will rotate fine. It is not needed to sand the internals, just using the puzzle will wear them down to a point where they're nice and smooth.

Lubrication: you can sparingly apply silicone lubricant to the internals (just do a misaligned twist to expose them) once the puzzle is well broken in. It makes an amazing difference, but you want to have used the puzzle quite a lot before you do this.

The caps will stay on quite well on their own but once you're satisfied that you've got the tension right and don't need to take it apart again I would (super-)glue them on as they can shift around a bit.

Dear Tom,

I am new at this forum, so forgive me about asking (maybe) too obvious question, but anyway...

You spent a lot of time designing this puzzle in some CAD tool (by the way, which one?).

Then you uploaded the design at shapeways, and shapeways is selling it for $185. Do you have a share in this $185? I mead, does shapeways pay you a part from each order?

Why asking: because I'd like to know if it is possible to obtain just design (STL file) somehow to print at my country (where printing may be cheaper). And I would like to know it if costs something to get it from you.

Regards,
Ihor.

Yes, I get a share in the $185. That's not just for my time but also for the amounts I'm investing in getting new prototypes made. It's actually making me a pretty penny so I'm quite protective of the STL.

But I'd love to hear about the place that will do printing cheaper. As Shapeways is already way cheaper than its competitors I'm a bit doubtful that you can get printing done cheaper, but tell me anyway. I don't think I want to sell the actual STL file but I could get the puzzle printed at the cheaper place myself and then send it on to you (or have them ship directly to you).

In any case, It's not going to work if the cheaper place is a school/university. Printing over there is meant for educational purposes, not for commercial purposes.

Dear Tom, thank you very much for your answer. Now I understand how it is working.

It is really nice that there is such a company like shapeways whom you (the author of model) can outsorce the work on printing. And definitely with respect to you and other authors, I will order the puzzle from there.
