To my knowledge, there has not yet been a fused puzzle like this one. The Magicube Fusion is a combination of 2 of Erno Rubik's Greatest Puzzles, the Rubik's Cube and the Rubik's Magic. The cube was cut so that the magic would be flush against the top layer. The 3x3 cube has the same restrictions as the siamese cube (shown here http://www.twistypuzzles.com/cgi-bin/pu ... i?pkey=467). The magic can still be solved normally.

I don't really like it that much. It is unique and new but I don't really like magics that much. To me they are more like speed stack cups. It is a "how fast can you do the same thing" instead of a thinking thing.

Rubik's cubes are hardly a step up though. Nothing beats your reaction the first time you solve a 3x3
!

Speedcubing is knowing 100s of different cases, then applying the a set algorithm for each case.
The fridrich method is also know as brain dead method, roux petrus ZZ and other block building methods require a bit more thinking.
Actually thinking during a speedsolve is likely to ruin your solve, as the best solves are closer to reflexes then thinking.

But I'm getting offtopic,
Interesting idea, as the cube is somewhat wider, the magic is now slightly bandaged?
Though not enough to pose a problem for solving it.
