My guess is he just exposed the hidden pieces and didn't use the little bandaging piece That'd work and would be a relatively easy procedure.

TomZ is right , all you have to do is to get a 3x3x4, cut off the parts of the middle layers that cover the hidden layer, sand to round the cuts, and then replace all the pieces of the hidden layer with pieces of a DIY 3x3. When you unarm the 3x3x4 you will know clearly where to cut. Just 1 or 2 hours of work (that is 4 hours for me) a pic of the mechanism courtesy of eMp_dWa where you can see the hidden layer and how it is covered:  Finally, I strongly recomend to use a 3x3 of same color than 3x3x4 I used a type B 3x3 bought I dont remember where, 2 years ago, and it fits perfect, but color is not exactly the same. But stickers hide that  you 'd better try black color...
