You might be saying to yourself, this just looks like an ordinary void cube with only black stickers right.....

Wrong! Nahh, actually this is a mod that i have been wanting to make for a while, but never got around to it, this is by far my best mod, and probably the most fun one i have ever made, I dont think anyone has ever incorporated a void cube with a brainstring before, but i find the brainstring to be a very interesting puzzle :) . I need to thank katsmom for letting me know what the material in brainstrings was so thanks :D . I would like to ask that nobody copies this mod in the intension to sell, this was my idea, so please respect that. Let me know what you all think.

EDIT:
The object is to get it untangled once scrambled, but there are many parity problems that you will encounter, but you can solve it like a 3x3, i wont give off all the ways on how to solve it.

I hand cut these stickers, they are pretty bad looking, but i had no extra stickers lying around, i will replace them with some soon though

Wait, is the point of the puzzle to get it untangled?

Stickers need a little, but when you asked about the elastic material, I had no idea what you were going for. I like it!

Video/Solve available any time soon?

I actually wouldn't mind seeing these sell (Once you've sorted out stickers). They make me smile :)

Great job.

Epic :)
Do you have any ideas as to how much they'll cost?

Other than that, it's an interesting mod.

I'd use a knock off for this sort of thing, too.

Looks like it could get real stuck real fast. I like it.

What do you mean by stuck? If its the turning, its excellent, it will lock up though, but thats due to the nature of the void cube.

Great idea by the way!

Considering official Void Cubes are $9, that shouldn't drive the price up much, if they were to be sold.

Thats how much Hidetoshi gets them in japan. Therefore, if you were to make a deal with one of the japanese members, then you could probably get them for around 12ish dollars.. Depending on how many are ordered, shipping etc.

Can I make a sugguestion? Instead of clipping the metal bits off the hair ties, why not cut them in half and slide the metal bit through the end then turn it sideways.

I also just thought of something else. We have these paper fasteners here which are basically a hair tie with a 1/2 inch to 1 inch metal bit on either side. They might work too. I usually see them in doctor's offices, or in personel files when more pages have to be added to the original file. I think they are just called paper fasteners.

I just saw these on a display case at giant eagle. I don't think cutting the metal piece in half would work, because the elastic needs to stick in the middle, but I know what you're talking about.

Yes, it can get mixed up very fast, just doing sune, then trying to reverse it wont work, you actually have to do sune backwards in the order it was executed, .

Just had a thought: If it was stickered like a normal cube, then solving the colors wouldn't solve the strings. And vice versa. So there would be three solutions, making it much more complicated.

So, this cube can only be scrambled so much before it binds up/breaks the elastic things? Right? :? I like the idea of a regular stickered void+string.

Actually, there would be only 2, since the corners dont really matter with the string solution, that is 1, and then there is when the corners are solved.

Im actually glad to say that that is incorrect. I have fully scrambled this using a cube scramble program, and the strings were no where near to breaking. Also, if i start to sell these and you would like one, id be glad to make it 6 colored. :)

Well, there is only a limited number of "excessive face turns" achieveable by a standard random scramble. Prolonged usage may indeed lead to "string tangle - blockage".

WOOOOW
This is soo cool. I love this. Awesome idea.

I have two questions right now:
Can this puzzle get stuck by turning until the strings are wrapped around each other until you cant turn it any further (except undo the last move or ripping the strings apart)?
And which of your pictures show the solved state? I didn't quite understand yet. Is there always two pieces linked togehter by one string?

Yeah I just realized that I have 3 and not 2 questions. I can count, that's good!

Ok, yes, that can happen if turn it so much, so if you have to force a turn, i would advise to undo some of your turns. The pictures that show the solved state are labled front and right, for the front and right side. :)

Irony is a terrible thing, but i deserve this, it is completley understandable that i shouldnt have made that request, but im 13, i dont have a job, so i couldnt buy a real void cube because there was no way i could afford the 24 dollars to purchase just 1 real one, i know that isn't a real excuse, but again, i only used a knockoff because i wanted to see if it worked. Sorry :( .

Honestly, Wouldn't you say the limited investment of a knockoff be better for an untested mod than using a fully-functional original on an idea that you weren't sure would work?

That being said, I think you should make one from an official Void Cube now that you have tested the idea with a lower-cost knockoff.

Or, as was said earlier,

Didnt many people agree that they wouldnt mind buying a few v-cube KOs for mods? At least back when V-Cubes were much more money? (I paid over 120 for a single V-7 shipped.)

I know this has been discussed before, but you shouldn't buy KO's for any reason, safe educational.

What you can do, is work your way up. Tony fisher, for example used both official Void Cube, and V-Cubes for his mods.

I mean, that if you cant afford to make something while respecting the original designer, then you should wait until you can.

Please note I was not trying to degrade GuitarSD.

No, I understand what you are saying and i realize this, but this is simply a prototype and nothing else will come of it. I do have in my posession a real void cube that i purchased with my christmas money this year, so that will be my first 1 that i will sell via PM's, Im tired of ebay, and i need to make a comment for everybody, i realize it was wrong that i used a KO, but like TomZ said, i dont want this to be another KO thread, this is simply to share my idea with you all.

I my mind's eye I have an image of someone scrambling it too much and it suddenly solving itself in a blur. :)

But would it be possible to look at the strings and reverse the solve like undoing a knot?

In theory, yes, but since many strings are affected by this, it would be a very difficult thing to do, so what i did was solve it like a 3x3, then untwist the strings myself(couldnt figure out an alg to fix it :) )

I have a simple suggestion that I think would make a huge difference: use different colour strings! Otherwise it will be difficult and quite frustrating trying to peer inside and work out how the strings are tangled, like trying to untie a knot in a black shoelace where you can't make out what goes where. Working out how to solve a puzzle is fun, but not when you can't even see what you're trying to do...

Best way then would be to buy a few different colour elastic hair ties, cut them up and attach with knots at each end.

PS - one other thought: if you make the elastic strings tight and use enough lube, the puzzle might even solve itself

That is an interesting idea. I think GuitarSD chose black strings though, to reference the Brainstring from which this puzzle was inspired.

The strings are attached to specific cubies though, right? So you could color those cubies with different colors. Then it'd still follow the Brainstring model, kind of.

To answer most questions regarding colors and string colors, if you are to pm me about buying one, I will gladly make them any color, sticker color, string color, or any combination of the two, but for string colors, they will be either floresent(spl), white, black, or brown, so you all gotta work with me on that one, but stikers are no problem.
