VIDEO
A while back Tony fisher posted a topic about what puzzles should be built, but had not. I was fascinated by the idea of an extended megaminx, however no one tried to make it. so I got a bit of determination this weekend and decided to build it.

Designing the parts took a few hours, and cleaning the masters took a few more. I started pouring the molds Sat April 18th at 1am, and finished assembling the puzzle today at 2:10am. much stickering was done since. I'm always slow with that. In any case This puzzle works perfectly however some faces are a bit tighter than others. sadly I accidentally turned the tightest of second layers in the video, but rest assured the others are very smooth. just some adjustments needed.

The layers of this puzzle CAN be equal in size. However I chose to go with thinner extended layers to help balance out the face to side appearance. I think its quite pleasant.

I used Smooth Cast 300 as my resin and is now my favorite of all the resins so far, it has a perfect texture and cure time! if you cast, GET IT NOW!

enjoy the pics!

awesome puzzle, i cant remember where the thread talking about it was, but if anyone was gonna do it, it would be you

so did you use your gigaminx design and lower the corners and edges till they were inside the puzzle, or did you build from scratch?

edit: found it viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9371&p=146959&hilit=extended+megaminx#p146959

Totally better than what I guessed

You've outdone yourself again, only one more to go on Tony's list, I just wish I could finish my 3x4x5 designs

OOOOHHHHH OOHHOOO
I never thought that this is possible. Not in this size anyway. I mean ok, it's printed and not handmade but still. Megaminx fully functional extension on all 12 sides, that's insane!!!
But there is one thing I was already thinking when I saw Tony's Cross Cube.
If you made the additional "rows" like tips that would look even better. And I bet it would be hard to determine what it actually is if you shaped a cross cube like an octahedron and this awesome cross minx like an icosahedron.
Anyway, this is so cool. And hard to solve. Like solving centers of a super gigaminx. I could never figure out how to place the center square pieces on a 5x5 or 7x7 cube. If you can it should be simple to solve though. (obviously) :D

:D Excellent work, Drew! As others have said, it wasn't at all what I expected, but very nice nonetheless! I've always loved solving gigaminx centers for some reason, so this would be the perfect puzzle for me if I could get my hands on one.

Cool puzzle! When I first saw Tony's idea, I noticed that the original megaminx it would be made of would need very wide edges, which no mass produced medaminx really had. This is a good solution, just CAD it.

Very nice! Did you design the core, or use an existing one? Also, I'm glad you decided to check out the Smoothcast 300. I love that stuff. Don't promote it too much......you'll drive up the price! :D

Not really. Get all five edges in the correct layer, then position a corner piece that needs to go into the correct layer directly below an open corner piece in the layer you're solving, on the right hand side. Then move the right face clockwise, top face clockwise, right face counterclockwise, top face clockwise, right face clockwise, top face counterclockwise twice, right face counterclockwise. It's just like inserting a single center corner on a 5x5 in the last layer...or look at it as a sune modified for a dodecahedral puzzle.

That being said, the puzzle looks amazing. Nice to see you straying from the tetrahedral-based puzzle realm. I wouldn't say you've outdone yourself, but you've done quite a nice job with this one.

So, are we going to see a cross-tetrahedron in the near future?

Hi :-)

I was hoping there would be stickers behind the extended layers. Thta would have led to a more intereting puzzle. "Megaminx within megaminx" - sort of. This puzzle should be easier to solve than a normal megamix - but a bit more pieces ...

Per 8-)

Yes I did initially want stickers inside the layers, to make a megaminx inside it, however I think they might rub off with all the turning

Well, the puzzle as is behaves exactly like a super gigaminx centers only (by center I mean any piece that is not on an edge or corner of the gigaminx).
If you add your "interior" megaminx inside:
First off, the edges of said interior puzzle would never be visible  only the corners so it's more of an "impossiball within gigaminx-centers"
Second, this adds to the total positions of the puzzle. To solve you could simply solve the interior puzzle and then the exterior without much increased difficulty, but it would undeniably take longer, and perhaps therefore is more difficult to solve than a Cross-Minx as is. But how does the Cross-Minx relate to the megaminx in difficulty? That depends on your method 8-) You have much more freedom with a cross-minx but also have to worry about new tricky permutations that aren't present on Gigaminx centers so it's hard to say which would be more difficult :)

Peace,
Matt Galla

Well not quite. The middle center of a super gigaminx would have visible orientations. On this puzzle they do not. I want to play this puzzle on some applet/simulation as i for sure never will see this puzzle in real life
