I know this is no *new* puzzle, but it is new to me. Thank you TomZ for the designs! I won't say much about it now, but there is a good chance that this puzzle will be available in the near future as a waiting list, but price is currently undetermined. Instead of taking internal pictures, the disassembly video was made. Enjoy!

Very nice! Looks like a bandaged 3x3x4 shrunk down to the two middle layers.

Definitely a much better alternative to the spindle domino, as far as molding and casting is concerned.

Precisely, this was talked about in a thread not to long ago. However, I am too lazy to go looking for it right now.

Would you mind elaborating on how to do this with the masters for the 3x3x4 Superman, because I will have them soon and would like to do this. :D

Thanks,
Chris

Well, this puzzle is not an adaptation of the 3x3x4. It's actually an entirely different set of masters. No piece is the same as the 3x3x4, also. I suppose that the 3x3x4 can be adapted, but I'm not sure how well it would work.

I think it's just a Russian domino, also done by traiphum

On the subject of the comments from the videos:

So, one layer goes around a thing while the other layer IS the thing? How does that work?

There are technically three layers. There are the two outer layers, and the one hidden layer. The hidden layer, however has one of it's pieces glued to a piece from one of the outer layers. This prevents the hidden layer from getting "lost" in the puzzle, causing it to not be able to turn.

I think the point being made was that this is essentially the same mechanism used in the 3x3x4 and the Russian domino with some minor variation, that's all. The similarities can clearly be seen.

Still it's nice to see that it turned out quite well.

And you *can* make a 3x3x2 from the 3x3x4 masters. The centerpiece would have to be taller though.

Great! I'm glad it turned out so well :-)

Besides making the STL files I didn't really have anything to do with the design. This is really a copy of the Russian domino mechanism. I didn't have an original to take measurements from so there might be some minor dimensional variations, but apart from that it's entirely the same.

Exactly. I'm very sorry for being so vague and brief in my earlier post, but I meant to say that this 3x3x2 was not directly made from the 3x3x4 masters from TomZ. TomZ did, however, design the 3x3x2 seperately, and I had them printed not too long ago. The 3x3x2 is a relative to the 3x3x4 in it's design, and actually have very similar parts, but there are some slight differences. I mainly meant to tell Synester that I did not modify the 3x3x4 parts to get this puzzle. I will take more pictures of the mechanism to elaborate on the differences in my next post to show how similar the pieces are to the 3x3x4 and how the 3x3x2 looks on the inside, for those who are curious.

Look for this soon in the marketplace as a waiting list. My black alumilite is not working correctly, so I'm afraid that only white will be available until I figure out how to make the black resin set correctly. Price is still undetermined.

Thanks! Pictures soon!

I finally have some piece pictures. The pieces on the left are of the 3x3x2, whereas the pieces on the right are from the 3x3x4. The pictures a large to show the small differences. Let me know what you think! Sorry in advance for all the huge pictures.
