I forgot to say that there are only 6 different colors but there is a chrome = of each color on opposite faces.

From one direction the solved puzzle looks like an octagon, and from another, a hexagon. "Octahex"? "Hexocta"? Perhaps something along those lines?

Well it is neither an octagon, nor a hexagon because those are 2-dimensional shapes. However, it isn't an octahedron or hexahedron either. It is actually an elongated square dipyramid.
