I would lime to present a puzzle that I built 2 samples of last weekend:
Video Demonstration
Video of Assembly

Teraminx v2
Image
(it should be noted that Alumilite White turns horribly, nothing but sticky turns!)

I decided to shrink down the size of the Teraminx to a comfortable size that fits snug in the palm of your hand. the result is an amazingly smooth turning puzzle. I cast the pieces from Polyjet masters. with such high resolution the only concern I had was the shrinkage from the silicon mold and the resin. I think the exact dimensions of the print and the shrinkage has resulted in a puzzle that rattles more than I'd like. I will revisit this puzzle in FDM and post the findings later on.

Here is an outline of the Build Process.

Build Time:
Building mold base..........................5 hours
mix/pour silicon...............................2 hours
Casting parts...................................6 hours
Cleaning parts.................................6-7hours
Assembly.......................................4 hours
Painting..........................................2 hours
Drying paint....................................72 hours
Sticker Application..........................2 hours

my question is why cast it in white resin if you were going to spraypaint it?

Even black resin can't be completely spray painted white, besides you'd see the black in between the cracks

Good point. Another question: why spraypaint it at all if ti is already white plastic?

Because within 5 min of assembling the faces started truing black and dirty gray colors. it wasn't white so much as an oily gray.

I would just say Stop making Minx's for a while, the Petaminx, this Teraminx, their all overshadowing all the new puzzles that are coming out lately, Well this is my opinion.

EXCELLENT!! These really look great. I can't believe how 'clean' the pieces come out when using the Polyjet masters.
I just got hooked up with someone who has Polyjet printing capabilities. This is the way to go.

I'm also impressed by how you prepared the mold for the core. Again, great job!

Wow, Amazing. What is the weight difference between V1 and V2? Black or white, they both look fantastic.

I love what you've done with the core -- I haven't seen cast cores like that before. I think that may be the largest technical innovation in the things.

And of course, yes, they are very cool in themselves.

Hold your horses, as I said, the polyjet has possibly produced a very rattly puzzles. alot of parts are lose and sometimes can be forced out. I will be making an FDM copy of the puzzle this weekend, we'll see how the FDM copy turns out vs the Polyjet master built.

I think the problem is in the fact that the polujet are the EXACT size of the part, and the mold + resin shrinkage produces smaller parts which cause the looseness.

The black Teraminx turns awesome, and the white turns like crap. imagine rubbing 2 rubber balls together, that's how it turns. I will try smoothon white in the future to compare the difference.

Lol, your head will explode. Guaranteed that more than one more puzzle comes out this week.

Back on topic: Drew, this looks fantastic. I will certainly watch the videos when i come home from school today, and even if the white teraminx turns crappily, it still looks gorgeous. You do excellent work, and each new puzzle is a huge surprise and is always welcomed. If i had the money i would buy one, if only to support you and your building, although the draw of a teraminx is a bit high too ;)

Kind of a random question, will you be selling these ones on bedardpuzzles.com, or will it still be your previous model? Either way, great job, and i can't wait to see more from you. :D

Hi Drewseph,

I can't stop admiring your photos of the process and the puzzles themselves.
They are pure masterpieces and take puzzle building to a new level! :D
Fantastic job.
Do you just paint the outside of your puzzles then? (I do mean the black ones!)

I had a chance to watch the assembly video. That was ingenius to use a set of glued-together bridge pieces. Wish I had thought of that while assembling the petaminx. I'm considering completely disassembling it and re-doing it because there are a number of parts I want to redo (probably why Dave was ripping his hair out trying to get it to work better). Also, I can't get the center screws and springs out without completely removing the center, which means I have to remove all the parts around it. I'll probably just transfer the parts from one core to the other.

Not to shoot down your dreams, but it won't have any dramatic effect. the V1 works perfectly, they both take the same amount of time to make. for now, its gonna have to stay the same. we'll see down the road.but the V2 is not planned for sale yet.
