I too want to make it clear that I am not insulting this build in any way! I love it and can't wait to see it with stickers and maybe a video. I just want to also offer advise on what might be able to be improved upon. I think my shell idea in the revised file might have been a good call. I'm sad I didn't think of it earlier.

I could see the shell helping with assembly and alignment. It would also help contain the cave-ins better. :)
Well, at this point, unless there's a major flaw uncovered in the original design, we're stuck working with the v1.

Drewseph, I sense a Petaminx V2 coming. Can you really resist making one now?

Simply amazing... I am not sure if I am stunned by the cold here in Nuremberg,
or by that heavenly glorious puzzle...!

Well done to everyone who participated in this project!

Does this image show the revised design or the original?

http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/download/file.php?id=9159

Which ever one it shows could you make a similiar image for the other? I'd love to understand the difference a little better.

Great work all around guys,
Carl

I may be wrong, but I think the design you use can be made to even make... the 666x666x666 Minx, whatever that would be named. If you ever make one, I'll pay you $3 million for it.

But as for now, would it be as hard for you to sell as Drewseph's Teraminx? Would it really cost MORE than $2000?

I think you guys did a fantastic job!

Given you were working with FDM, there are bound to be tolerance problems. The parts come out unsmoothed and at that res you really have to guess at what the real part contour should be. Smoothing it gives you a certain contour. Sanding gives a smaller one. Filling with putty and sanding a third. Which is correct? PolyJet is your best bet ;) Without high-res printing it is just a guess. And with so many pieces these tolerances are incredibly important. With 16 surfaces from corner to corner a barely perceptable difference of 1/4 mm will mean a 4mm accumulated difference!

So it assembles and turns, which is a massive achievement given these hurdles.

Bravo!

Dave

P.S. We'll see how builder #1's turns out as it is being cast direct from PolyJet masters. We'll see...

Well, considering that it has many more pieces and requires even more fine-tuning and a lot more work to assemble and get just right, not to mention there are nearly a zillion little stickers to add on, all by hand, I'd say that somewhere between $3500 and $4500 would be reasonable.

I'd be shocked if anyone shelled out that kind of money for a puzzle. Even if the whole thing were polyjet printed and it was in pristine condition.

I think there's enough pieces in this puzzle that a "buy-in-bulk" discount would be in effect, qqwref ;)

My guess is that anyone making that would have to make it using polyjet printing only. With that in mind, I will have to pass. Too many unique pieces. Even one of each master will be expensive.

And yea, that's an 11x11.

I know they are expencive but would it be cheeper to just buy a nice printer than to print a cupple of these off of someone else?

LOL I think Bradley said an FDM printer goes for somewhere around $150k. Polyjet is probably considerably more, so unless you're going sell a whole lot of these, I don't think you'll get your money's worth out of it.

Alokin- I have the stickers cut. But I also have a very busy weekend, so maybe we'll see it stickered early next week. We still have some alignment/core issues to iron out first.

Starting at $26,900. Did you see that empty corner in my basement last night? Wouldn't it look good there?!?!

EDIT:For around $40,000 you can get a nice polyjet desktop printer. :)

To continue the kind of off-topic talk about 3D printers: At just $14,900 you can get yourself an uPrinter (FDM) by dimension - and better still: it comes in three colors. But still it will cost you over $2000 worth of overpriced plastic to print a petaminx.

On topic: we really need to get an 'even' minx (no, not kilo-) made. I think that it would make for a really nice looking puzzle with the non-planar cuts.

That was exactly what I was thinking. How could there be an order 9 minx if there isn't even an order 4 minx? The weird cutting planes, like on the kilominx, are of course aproblem, but if you could constuct it Dogic-like, the turning would be a lot better I believe.

Well, the 3D printers that have been produced by the Fab@Home Project cost less than 4000USD for a fully assembled unit and are designed for use with a wide variety of materials. I suppose the real question is whether a Fab@Home Fabber can produce pieces suitable for puzzle construction. http://fabathome.org/ has more information for those interested.

Best forecast I can give you is sometime next week. It's going to take awhile to get the springs out of the centers, and there are a few pieces I want to replace, so I have to make a new mold, then re-cast them. I want this puzzle to be beautiful- both in appearance and functioning.

Also, my biggest hold-up this weekend is I have a weekend packed with out-of-state personal stuff, and a funeral to deal with, so I probably won't have much time (if any) for puzzlemaking and the like.

So, sorry to disappoint. I promise, the instant it's in a condition we are satisfied with, there will be so many photos and videos, you'll be sick of them.

Hopefully builder #1 or #4+ will have something for you to enjoy soon enough. Hopefully he's been reading this thread, absorbing our difficulties, and adjusting his to accommodate.

See two posts up.
Not hiding anything, nothing shady here, I just have a really packed weekend with personal issues and a death in the family to deal with. Puzzle building has to take a back seat to these issues.
