This is my third mod. I used a 10 colour Dogic and based it on a picture I saw on the MathWorld site.

Given the Dogic's increasing rarity and my lack of modding experience, making this was quite scary. I have another Dogic (12 colour, superb movement, seldom pops), which I have absolutely no intention of ever modding.

I've searched this site via Google and can't find any references to this puzzle. I call it a 'Dogoc'. Has it been made before, and if so, can someone please tell me what it's name is?

A few errors I need to fix: some of the cumulation pyramids need filing, as they tend to snag if alignment isn't perfect. I used black modelling paint on the coloured Dogic tiles, after lightly sanding them - it's started flaking slightly and wearing when I twist the sides. Anyone know how I can effectively blacken coloured plastic? Also the geometry was difficult to get precise and it's slightly pillowed, but there's nothing I can do about that at this stage - I could lie and say it was a deliberate V-Cube look!

The pyramids are open ended, as the Dogic apexes need to pass through them slightly on certain turns.

This is one of those puzzles that makes your brain come to a screeching halt.

Nice work!

Very nice indeed!

I sketched up a similar mod a while ago using a megaminx instead, and decided not to bother as it looked like a lot of work for a puzzle that didn't even look very nice. The Dogic, though, is wonderful!!!

Outstanding!

It's a beautiful puzzle, though I'm having an extremely difficult time visualizing this puzzle. I can't quite figure out where the layers turn.
Perhaps one more picture halfway through a twist would help?

You have guts, man. I wouldn't be able to do something like that to a dogic. I'm having a hard time thinking about modding a rainbow cube... Anyway, your mod turned out nice. A video would be cool to see it work.

I'm very impressed, especially considering the overlap you mentioned.
I think to err on the side of slightly pillowed is better than having a concave look.

Sigh... and once again I'm speechless.

It seems there's a great mod being presented every day now.

And I really like the name.

Thomas

edit: I just grabbed a Dogic and I figured out how you made it. Very clever!

It's a beautiful puzzle, congrats on your 3rd build. I'm also having a problem visualizing how this puzzle turns, maybe a video in the near future

Wow. What a builder. I'm going to have to go away and look very carefully at my dogics and compare to these pictures!

So many puzzles! Keep them coming.

Here's the MathWorld link http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Octahedron.html
...there's an interactive 3D model halfway down the page that shows the geometry of this puzzle.

I'll take a 'half turn' picture sometime soon and add it.

15 minutes of staring and I still don't see how it turns. Could we see a video of the great mod?

I've added a few 'partial turn' pictures and a video link showing a few full turns. I agree that it's oblique slices aren't that obvious to pick out.

I thought the video would help me understand this.... ...but no. I still don't quite get it!

Amazing build!

I'm pretty sure it's like this: each large triangular face on the Dogic has its individual pieces bandaged together, making the puzzle underneath like an Impossiball (or, a Dogic without the rotating tips). The center triangles on each octahedron face are on top of one of these large triangles, and the same with each half of the pyramidal corner parts.

If you look at the partial rotation pictures, you'll see that the rotated "face" has 5 separate pieces, just like the Dogic would with the bandaging I mentioned.
I think this is correct. . .

Just think of it as an octahedron shaped Kilominx.

Thanks for the video. Octahedron - 12 edges. The "middle" of each edge mapped to a vertex of an icosahedron. I love these edge-face, corner-edge type mappings.
