Surprising. They must thing the collector market is big enough to support the cost to produce. I wonder if it actually will be?

Wow that's a pretty impressive feat from a commercial standpoint. It must either be an viable venture for them with profit to be made or they can afford to take the risk of making a product for a smaller market and are doing so to satisfy customers.
Either way, I will be eagerly awaiting it's release!

Really?
I mean, I know it's a cool puzzle to get and all, but I'm starting to think this might be a little optimistic. I can't imagine anyone paying $219 for a mass-produced puzzle. Hand-crafted, maybe. But... eegh. Bit crazy.

I kinda agree with you, though with the factors of hype and being the first company to mass produce this, 219$ isn't an awful starting price, I think within a 3-6 months it will drop below 200$

Rather expensive for a puzzle that will be fun to mix up, but I know I'll never be able to solve it! Not on my wish list.

It's expensive, but if it work well and evrything i think it sound resonnable, even if it's really expensive mf8 need to do profit with that puzzle? And there isn't much person who will buy that, even if it would be lower. But in another way, there is a lot of young speedcuber with money to waste, that were waiting for a petaminx witch wasn't the case couple years ago... , for me I have no idear if I will get one someday .

Assuming V-cubes pull their finger out, would any of you buy an 11x11x11 for $150-200? After all the solving experience is not new, just the bragging rights for "the biggest ...". I have a lot of puzzles on my list which are ahead of the Petaminx, although it does look like a quality puzzle. Good luck with the sales mf8.

I am pleasantly shocked at this news and I will certainly get a Petaminx! Congratulations to MF8 for daring to push the limits of mass-produced puzzles. The solving experience is not new, but with such big puzzles, my challenge is to find more efficient solution methods. My efforts to solve my Teraminx in under ninety minutes has led me to develop new algorithms and try more complex moves and has made me a better, more knowledgeable puzzler all around. I enjoy working on new puzzles, but sometimes it is fun to just work away at a familiar challenge ETA: Just imagine all the sticker variants this will get!

Do I get the pretty boy in the picture as well? That might just be worth the big price. Mind, he's got to have a dinner and song or two with me and at the very least, he MUST sticker that beast! Can you imagine??? Oh how I wish I had a darned visa last week.....Can't wait to see this one.

Once again my aim to stop collecting puzzles for the sake of it is going to be ruined. Can't wait to get one of these if it moves ok. We will soon be in the strange situation where a factory made puzzle is the highest order within it's category. Meaning we usually have a custom made higher order version for each factory made puzzle. I don't think we can really count the Examinx since I assume it was a failure and doesn't work. If it did we would surely have heard more about it by now. So come on Shapeways guys, I want to see a working Examinx by the end of the year or else!

Wow! Awesome! Who would have thought something like this would happen a couple of years ago? I'm really happy that mf8 takes more risks than others! And I hope mine comes as neatly stickered as the one in the picture

Talking about an Examinx I think its very possible. There is an 11x11x11 on the market and it seems to work quite well. I dont see any reason why that couldn't be translated into a dodecahedron. It will take a huge amount of human labour to assemble it, but Mf8 doesn't seem to be scared by that. I am willing to pay whatever you want for an Examinx as well. Looking at it from a business viewpoint you can see it as producing a normal batch of a regular puzzle and the buyer buys multiple samples at one time. (meaning the exa or petminx batch would be limited). All in all I hope the Petaminx will sell well and hopefully we'll see an Examinx too.

I would love to see DIY kits offered. The price is probably also due to the time spent assembling the puzzle, and I would rather save myself some money and assemble it myself.

True. BTW the first thing I would do with this epic, awesome, amazing, great thing is...disassembling and reassembling it for fun However I guess there won't be a DIY version because there would be missing pieces sometimes. :/

Quote: Assembled one petaminx takes about 4 hours. Can youtube video last for 4 hours or longer ? That's no problem. Just make the video(s) and then split them into 10 minute lengths. Upload them as part 1, part 2 etc. This would also help those who were interested in looking at specific sections of the assembly.

The biggest problem is its stability. There aren't too many options for a reliable mechanism. V-mech is too unstable, but anything else has too much friction. People don't desire them enough for the price it would cost. This might be a little off topic, but i found motivation to finish my examinx, and a feasible plan to sticker it.

^^^ YIPPEE!!! I'm surprised that the petaminx was mass produced. It has 975 pieces, beating out the 11x11 and the teraminx by almost 400 pieces. To grigir: how well does it turn (i.e. could you compare it's turning to another unmodded cube?)

Releasing a petaminx is a real challenge, because the reaction of the market would not be certain. Personnally, I was waiting this puzzle for a while and in spite of the complexity, number of pieces - if turning is good-, I am not sure I will buy it or not. Because, it costs 219$.
Concerning mass production, I would be happy to see a proper kilominx or an elite kilominx to complete the minx series.
For the examinx, I am looking forward to seeing a video, but it seems you have reach a saturation point in term of minx layers. Furthermore, my hands is not big enough to handle it (and it is surely the case for the petaminx - why not a void petaminx for the little guys ?)

I will not be buying it as it isn't my type of puzzle, but congratulations to MF8. After the teraminx I thought that we wouldn't see a higher order version mass produced but here we are.

I also support a Petaminx DIY option, though I think the attraction for me would be the fun of assembly, rather than any cost savings. Still, I am curious about the cost of the hypothetical DIY kit, given the Petaminx will cost $219 assembled. The DIY kit would cost $209? $199? $169? Perhaps a "deluxe" DIY kit would have some spare parts and NO assembly instructions (for even more fun )! Seriously though, can we get a preorder? And can TP members with relevant experience provide tips on getting the $219 puzzle approved by the loving spouse?
