Hi, I recently saw a person on the train, who was aiming to solve what I can only describe as a vintage puzzle! I have never seen it before(this may be due to being a relatively new collector)

It was spherical, and printed on it was a world. It was a 3x3x3 layer puzzle, but the main difference I could see was that the middle layers on all sides moved independently to the rest of the puzzle and the corners appeared to be locked in place (but this could just be due to me not seeing them being turned). The edges were split in to 2, both of equal size to the center pieces suggesting that these pieces could be switched with the edges etc.

I know that is very little description to go on and apologies for not being able to give more details, but if anyone has ANY info it would be much appreciated!

Sounds like the "Hungarian Globe". I've had the opportunity to play with one and it turned extremely poorly :-/

Nope, I can just use the museum :-)

I went to Museum -> Browse -> Other Shapes -> Sphere

On page 5 I saw http://twistypuzzles.com/cgi-bin/puzzle.cgi?pkey=1094 which is obviously the same mechanism. I clicked it, and saw the the museum calls the mechanism "Equator" which I clicked on to get: http://twistypuzzles.com/cgi-bin/pdb-search.cgi?act=mec&key=189

Slightly off-topic: This made my day.
There was a time when members said: "The museum is to outdated to be usefull.

Thank you Brandon.
