What became of the cubes that were used in the 1982 World Championship? As these were supposed to be from a special run, are they significantly different than the standard Hungarian made cube from that period? Does anyone have one?

I have one. It is a Politoys Büvös Kocka of the second generation with Ernö Rubik's signature printed on the text side of the box. The white center sticker has the Rubik's Cube logo. The first Politoys cubes didn't have Rubik's signature at all, the third generation had it next to the words "Büvös Kocka".

Do you have any photos of it to share? As far as you know, is there anything different about the internals of the cube? I would think that a cube designed for a competition would perhaps have gone thru a more stringent QA or possibly have had the design tweaked a bit.
