I just got a 1x2x2 and a Rubik's UFO in the mail today! (I'm not sure how rare the UFO is, so I just put it in here). This, along with the You-Cube 1d I made a little while ago, makes 30 puzzles in my collection (not counting my Rubik's 360, which I don't consider a twisty puzzle).

Also, I've heard that the individual layers of the UFO (as seen in the fourth picture) can turn. Is this false, or is my UFO just locking up a lot?

They turn. You must be locked up.

I received two Eastsheen 4x4x4's yesterday, however they are branded quite differently and called "Four Cubed". I have actually seen these stocked in a Westfield shopping centre near me, however they were always ludicrously priced, so I never bothered buying one. Both turn excellently and are perfect examples of Easthsheen puzzles.

Seeing as this is a packaging/ branding variation, i've included several photos for Andreas.

Yes Derby and I believe it was called "The Discovery Store", or something like that. I've actually stumbled across a fair few puzzles when in Westfield, mostly the latest Rubik's puzzles, 3x3x3's and sticker variations, but once I saw a 4x4x4 sticker variation and a Platypus variation, so if you keep your eyes peeled there is plenty to take the edge off shopping

Hi All,

Got these in 2 separate packages in 2 days - like London buses! :D

Image

Solved all but the Time Machine but very much looking forward to that after the stickering!
Thanks Smaz - great puzzles.

4x4x6 quality is much better than the 3x4x5 and my favourite cuboid now - thanks Calvin/TomZ

P.S. I hate parity!

P.P.S ...that Hexoid is almost affordable and it's so pretty

Today I drove to the custom office. My camouflage 3x3x3 and CubeTwist bandaged set arrived.
From the CT set one blue 1x1 sticker is missing. Perhaps it's possible to make all variants but with depend color scheme.

I'm not entirely sure if this constitutes as a rare puzzle [Admin: This one is probably closer to the "less rare" category, so I moved the post]. I got this a couple weeks ago from eBay for US$19.95 with US$3.00 shipping, brand new.

Got a package in the mail yesterday with four new puzzles: a Professor Pyraminx, an original Rubik's Clock with packaging and instructions in Japanese, a Dual Circle, and the Globe version of Vesa Timonen's Tangerine puzzle (produced in Japan by Hanayama).

The Globe puzzle is really cool! The design is very clever.

The puzzle is basically the same as Lorente’s Sphere, presented by Douglas Hofstadter in his July 1982 Scientific American article about the Rubik’s Cube and related puzzles.

3D printed samples of another version of this puzzle were made in 2009 (expIained below).

I assume that the present puzzle is an invention by Josip Matijek.
His puzzle was first presented on this forum by Sandy on 14 October 2004, see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3175.
It also mentions a patent.

A 3d-printed sample of a similar version of this puzzle was made in 2009.
That started with a design request by me (at the time being unaware of Mr Josip Matijek) on this forum on 15 May 2008, see viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9777

The challenge was picked up by Adam Cowan and based on his design I had a 3d sample printed.
This was presented on 8 November 2009, see viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15331

In between the design request and the final realisation of the puzzle I was looking for more information about Lorente’s Sphere and similar puzzles.
I discovered the initial information by Sandy and I was able to contact Mr Josip Matijek.
Initially this was via snail mail, later on also via e-mail.

Mr Josip Matijek explained to me that he made a first prototype of his version of the puzzle in 1989. A second version was made in 1996 (more samples).
Initially he called his puzzle ‘Kultball’.
He mentioned that the puzzle consisted of 20 parts all together, using 2 ‘element’ parts: a ‘permutator’ (12 parts) and a ‘rotator’ (8 parts) and he also mentioned that the inside of the puzzle was ‘empty’.
Mr Josip Matijek was trying to get the puzzle mass-produced which was difficult at the time, partly because of the political and economic situation in those years in the area he lived.
In 2009, he had 2 official licensees in Sarajevo for mass-producing the puzzle. There was a website but that website is no longer available.
In total he had 8 different designs (patterns) for the puzzle which was measuring 100 mm in diameter.

Mr Josip Matijek was born in Croatia in 1950 and lived in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) for 50 years until he emigrated to Australia in 2003 were he is living in the area of Sydney (at least in 2009).

Congratulations to Mr Josip Matijek for finally getting this lovely puzzle mass-produced.

Geert

Thank you Geert for your extensive post. I can't thank you to much about this. It took some time to put all that information into an appropriate description.

@mixer:
As moderator I have two pleas to you:
1. Can you give me the diameter and the weight of the Twistball?
2. Can you make two detailed images (both sides) of the combinescion?
The monochromatic background is very good.
Thank you in advance for your help and thank you for bringing up the twistball.

The purple color actually looks really cool. When solving, it doesn't mess up your recognition at all :)
The actual plastic itself is much better than the plastic used in the black starminxes from what I've seen, and breaks in VERY well. It gives really smooth turning too! Overall, it's really nice.
I find it funny that these ice purple starminxes were 'limited edition' but they are actually more common than the black ones

Finally got a Bauhinia Dodecahedron.
Image

Image

I decided, as the puzzle is neither black nor white, to use both black and white stickers on it. I really like the way it turned out. The turning itself, though, left much to be desired.

Image

As the turning was extremely catchy, I decided to completely disassemble the puzzle and remove all of the leftover plastic flash. There was a LOT.

Image

You can see where the flash had scratched the pieces fairly badly.

Image

Example of flash on a small triangular piece.

Image

Example of flash left on an edge piece.

Image

Halfway assembled.

Now it turns wonderfully; the catching has completely disappeared. The only thing left to do now is figure out how to solve it  ! I got all of the edges and petals in place, but I think I'm going to have to start over with a new strategy :( .

Sorry about the picture quality but they're stills from my video camera.

First up is a fully functional C4Y 3x3x4 from Lightake and it cost £9.22, I think it's a lot of fun and turns really fast and smoothly.

VID00447.jpg
VID00447.jpg [ 117.94 KiB | Viewed 2574 times ]

And then a Ayi 3-Layer Cheese and 4 cube stands from Championscubestore for around £16 in total. I've decided to start colleting the cube stands because I thought it would be fun to try and get one of each brand, and because they're so cheap and they don't take up much space.

I recently got a startlingly large package from PuzzleMaster in Saskatchewan. 14 Puzzles in all (no twisties). You can see documentation and individual comments from each puzzle at the Facebook Puzzle Photography group. If you're not a Facebook person and you still want to see the photos/want more detail, send me a PM and I'll hook you up.

Note: the stickers and Zhanchi were not part of the package (Zhanchi is there fore size reference - some puzzles are huge and others quite teeny!)

Completing my gem puzzles collection! The orange dayan gem VII turns like a dream, also the square faces, but the green dayan gem IV is not that great turning! But they all look awsome :) i recently solved the blue dayan gem III, so happy.

My parcel just arrived. FINALLY, I might say. I ordered it on 11-1-14! This was in it:
A SMAZ dino cube, a MF8 Square-1, a 3x3x1 Super floppy, and a circle 2x2x2.

The circle 2x2x2 is a real fun challenge, and it turns really well actually! The floppy is really easy, but a nice addition to every collection I think, the other 2 I still have to solve.
