Threads like this http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=14462&start=0 really get me wondering...

For those who find gems (like Steve) at a car boot sale what time of the day are you there when you find them?

I never find a darned thing. Perhaps I'm going to the wrong ones :) Perhaps I get there late.

I have never been to a car boot, but a general rule for garage/yard sales is to go as early as possible, as the goodies get snatched up quick.

i was just talking to him about my hobby

and he showed me the star .. and gave it to me or 1 dollar

Well, here in Western Australia, many items could be found twelve years ago.
We also call them swap meets or swap marts.

Then, ebay was discovered, and many "hyenas" (as a good friend calls them)
found the perfect ground to profit. They go as early as possible, while throughout
the years they have made personal connections with most of the sellers.
They get a puzzle for peanuts and then they sell it for gold. The problem is,
the hyenas disguise as sellers who can enter one hour earlier than the buyers,
leaving not much chance for others.

Genuine buyers only have a chance (*if* they are lucky to stumble on a seller
which has an interesting puzzle which was overlooked by the hyenas AND has no
connections to the hyenas), if they go early. Personally, I haven't found anything
interesting the past ten years, so I have stopped going to the big (organised) ones
because that is where the hyenas lurk. Going to small swap meets, increases the
chances of finding something good, as they are of no interest to the hyenas.

This situation is not only happening to puzzles, but to all vintage items
(like LCD games, old quality board games, etc)

:)

The only things I've ever managed to dig up at yard sales are standard Rubiks cubes, mostly the new Seven Towns ones but I did find one from the 90s (Brokn now :P), usually unsolved.

Then again, my first cube ever was from a yard sale. Turned terribly and had a horribly loose yellow side, but still was my first cube.

For the most part, though, I'd look early in the morning. I'd assume that here in Massachusetts there wouldn't be too many people at flea markets/ yard sales looking for different cubes, but there aren't many selling them either...

As early as possible is allways best..

I found a rubik's fifteen and a 15 replica. (also grabbed a broken computer, a big square mouse, 2 cell phones that need a custom pocket to hold them and a golden goblet. They were all free. All of the chipboards are mounted on my wall and the mouse is being used by my old tech teacher)

I'm with the go early camp here.

Early in the season seems to yield more rewards as regular sellers have built up stocks off season

On sunny days, there are far more "occasional" sellers around who tend to have more interesting items than the regular sellers.

Of course the key tip is to avoid any sale that has not previously been frequented by any member of TwistyPuzzles.

The puzzles I posted really did represent a surprisingly good weekend finds - it's rare that I pick up more than 3 or 4 puzzles of which usually only one or two are twistys.

The items over the last week or two have been a Theme Park World cube, an Orb-it and the attached unidentified moving piece sphere puzzle. Can anybody identify this one for me please?

Finally, found my most dangerous puzzle of the year this week, a Mercury Maze puzzle complete with blob of mercury.

Steve

Thanks everyone for the insight.

I guess by the time you get the family ready, do a bit around the house, do some things it town... Sometimes it's more practical to do things later on the way home or something so not always easy to go to a car boot sale first thing in the morning.

From that perspective, I miss out :)

Are you just going to leave the white side unsolved? The 2 goes where your 7 is, your 3 goes where the 6 is, etc.

I owned several of these when I was a kid, and still have them up in the attic somewhere. I know for a fact that no toy manufacturer would be caught dead making these anymore. It's ashame, because the blob mazes were really quite fun :o

I used to have a huge puzzle bin when I was little; I had a few twistypuzzles, although many of them were of the "steel ball rolls through maze" type dexterity puzzles. My mom's 1981 white Pyraminx (same age as I am - complete with florescent Meffert's labels) survives intact to this day, but the tetrahedral display case is missing. I need to find my old childhood puzzle stuff and go through them at some point before my family have their huge garage sales. Now that I'm an adult collector, some of those items may have found new meaning.

We probably have at least a thousand other little gems, lost in our garage; sadly most of the dolls as well as my moms sci-fi books, either got mildewed or shredded by rats
