does anyone know a direct solution to Square1 (I mean, for solving it from any shape, not necessarily through cube shape). Solutions from Jaap, Monroe, Arensberg, ..., are very interesting, but you must first get your puzzle into a cube shape.

I suppose it would be possible, but what would be the point in developing such a solution? You'd probably need to have over a million patterns to do such a thing, making it well outside the boundaries of human solvers. The only reason I could see to develop a solution such as that is to create a computer program which determines God's Algorithm. Making a printed copy would be possible, I suppose, but ridiculously huge and cumbersome. Assuming 1 million combinations, averaging 12 (?) moves/combination, The solution would be about 20 megs or more (optimistically speaking). As a comparison, the complete King James Bible, uncompressed (over 1100 tightly packed double column pages) is only 4.5 megs. Although it's an interesting idea, I really can't see how such a would would be practical. L8r.
