In an article in The Volkskrant, Peter Dejonghe claims he has is the first one to solve the 4x4x4 cube. Does anyone know if this is true?

I have translated the article so you can understand.

He made the claim while he was talking about his school. do you think thats what he meant? i would imagine someone involved in the manufacturing of it would have been first...

Minh Thai had his book on solving the Rubik's Revenge out before it was made available. At least one other person made an ersatz revenge using a regular cube with velcro stickers, Kristin Looney (formerly Wunderlich).

Peter Sebesteny filed his 4x4x4 cube patent on
Jan 29, 1982, assuming he had the first working prototype, he would have had the first chance to solve a physical 4x4x4 cube.

Dr. David Singmaster mentions the possibility of a 4x4x4 cube in his notes dated Sept. 23, 1979. This is the earliest reference I can find, but I think the first production 4x4x4's don't appear until much later. I'll recheck cube-lovers for the first mention as well.

I'd imagine that Erno Rubik was one of the first, if not THE first, person to solve the Revenge. In the commercial they had on TV, they showed Erno (presumably. Only the hands were visible) playing with a scrambled Revenge. On the desk in front of him, there was a bunch of papers with pictures showing various Revenge patterns for solving it. At the end of the commercial, the Revenge was solved. L8r.

I see that I didn't translate the part completely it stated:
Without being modest: "I was really good".
I was the first one in the World who solved the 4x4-version of the cube and I became fifth in the WK magic in Londen.

Sorry for the incomplete translation.
But he claims he is the first one in the world to solve it!!!!!

A post from 28 May 1982 in the cube-lovers archives refers to actual sales of the 4x4x4 cube in Cambridge. The name of the store was "The Games People Play". There are many earlier references in 1981 about solving macros and computer simulations of the 4x4x4.

I would definately agree that some smart cookies solved the 4x4x4 before Rubik released it. I'm not sure if that counts however. There are some fine lines in there, and who knows where Peter Dejonghe is drawing his.

There are probably a dozen people or more who make a similar claim. And all may well be at least partially correct.
