I saw a completely blue rubiks cube on eBay the other month and thought I would make one for my girlfriend. So I ordered 54 blue tiles from Mefferts. Well last night I patiently stuck them on the cube. It looks pretty cool but I noticed that since Mefferts tiles are grained there is an amount of solvability for this cube. I put them on in a manner similar to what I imagine the shepherds cube is like. So it seems as if this will be almost as difficult to solve as that but not quite, due to the fact that you can only really orient the centres in one of two visible ways and the edge pieces have no visible orientations.
I can imagine getting some funny looks if I try and solve this one on the train.
By the way, has anyone ever made a nice picture version of the 5x5x5? When I solve mine I (sometimes) make sure all the centre tiles have their grains running in the same direction, but it is still most likely that some are in the wrong place. But with only two visible orientations what can you do?
