Just got a nice surprise parcel in the post from the wonderful people at Rubiks.com.
The pack includes:

3 Rubiks lanyards
3 Rubiks pens
3 Rubiks drawstring bags
1 Rubiks T-Shirt
2 Rubiks cube squashy stress toys
1 Keychain cube
1 Keychain snake
1 Void cube
2 Rubiks 3x3 cubes
1 Rubiks 2x2 cube
1 Rubiks double sided challenge puzzle (looks like a fancy jigsaw-type assembly puzzle thing)

Sweet!

I only just realised, however, that the 3x3s and the 2x2 are all tiled. No stickers. I knew that the 2x2s were tiled, but I didn't realise that there were new 3x3s with tiles out... Have I missed something or got something very early before the release?

Also I can't find any reference on rubiks.com to the jigsaw type puzzle...

Have you looked at the mechanism of the 3x3s? I've heared that Rubik's wanted to come out with a new 3x3 design... I think that it is caped on the outside of the puzzle, and this was not like this on my Rubik's 3x3s

I can't get inside it to look. Trying to pop it is difficult. There's wings to the pieces inside. It's almost like an extended ball core. It's hard to describe and difficult to capture on camera. I think if I try to get inside, I'll break it.

Wow. Looks like they are starting to realize that they need quality puzzles to keep up with chinese cubes.
I know the latest 4x4 is only ~one year old but I hope they bring out a new 4x4 with a completely different mechanism and tiles :D

The tiles are recessed into the cube. It's the same as the 2x2 they sent. I think that type has been out for a while now.

I have not seen the tiled 2x2x2 or 3x3x3 anywhere before, I didn't even know they existed!

It is in their store here.

Are there centercaps and screws? If so, you can take it apart by unscrewing it.

The gaps between the center/edge/corner pieces look larger than the usual Rubik's brand 3x3x3. Does it cut corners well?

Thanks, I missed that in the store.

It cuts better than any rubiks brand cube I've seen, but not as well as my guhong II. It is smoother than most storebought, and both have the same level of resistance. I have had smoother from them, but most are worse.

I'd say that if this is the new standard of storebought from them, I'm impressed. If this is what you'll buy every time you buy a storebought, then it's a big step forward for them. I've been pretty disappointed in the past by the fact that no two storeboughts are the same. About 3 I've had have been great, better than these at turning, but about 20+ have been far worse.

Maybe I'm missing something but this looks like the V-mech to me.

I take it they still haven't decided to use screws and an easily removable cap? Being able to adjust the tensions or just to disassemble more easily are some of the biggest reasons why off-brand cubes are more favorable.

I can't find any easy to access caps. I suspect that any screws are under the centre tiles which are then glued down.

I think people will just have to wait until these hit the market properly before we know.
