After seeing Tony's flat V-7, Oskar's 17-layer monster, and now Greg's 10-layer not-quite-monster, it occurred to me that cubical cubes of very high order might look very nice if the edges were truncated (as truncated rhombic dodecahedrons or rhombicuboctahedrons, basically), leaving the sticker areas proportional (so, not truncated all the way to the edge of the piece).
