I am going on a 2 month canoe trip in a few days, and I can only take one cube with me. There is a lot of puzzles to choose from and I seem to be having a hard time deciding.
So, this brings me to the main point of this post. If you where going away for a long time, and you could only have one puzzle to entertain you, which one would you choose?

Funny you should ask this, because I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow. I'm bringing my 3x3, 4x4, and my 7x7. If I had to bring one, though, I'd take my 3x3. Small, portable, doesn't take too much time to solve, impresses people in airports, doesn't pop too much. Can't beat the classics.

I agree with the 3x3.
I own a huge amount of puzzles, including 6 dogics, and every mass-produced puzzle of late, and nothing gets more play time than a regular 3x3.

I always have my 3x3, 6x6 and gigaminx in my backpack but if I don't have my backpack with me I ALWAYS have a 3x3 on hand. Never gets old.

I recently traveled with TomZ's Unbandaged Helicopter Skewb and it turned out to be a great choice. Most of the solve is resolving jumbling so every solve is different from the others. I don't think the same is true of most doctrinaire puzzles.

There are many puzzles what is interesting, but I think the mail question is what do you want to do with the puzzle.
I always have a 3x3x3 with me. It is an obvious choice. But some times, if I buy a new puzzle, I take it with me, just to learn how to solve it!
My advice: So if you have some (one) puzzle, what you did not solve yet, take it with you. If you can solve all, take the 3x3x3!

I would choose SwitchBack, because it has many challenges, I can play with this puzzle for a very long time.

If there can be only one then it would surely have to be a cube with images from the film Highlander on it. Personally I'd go with the puzzle which you enjoy solving above all others, or something with the greatest variety of challenges. I was going to say pick a puzzle you haven't yet solved, but if you manage to solve it within a few days and don't enjoy the solving process, then you're kinda stuck with it regardless.

I travel for work on very small airplanes almost every week. I always have one puzzle with me, so this is a constant question! I choose a simple puzzle such as 3x3, 4x4 or crazy 4x4. Of course, I always find room in my luggage for a couple more.

I may catch flack for this but...
Don't take any puzzles. Enjoy the trip you are about to take and let it all sink in.

Well I don't want to not have any puzzles because I will forget how to solve them. If I forgot how to solve say, a 3x3, I don't know what I would do with my self. Too much is at stake!
Also, I have decided to take a 3x3. Cheap and not difficult to replace.

After learning how to solve a 3x3 and solving for maybe 2 months, I stopped solving for 2 years. That was when I didn't know anything about the twisty puzzle community. I then decided to pick back up on it and, like a bicycle, I still remembered how to solve my 3x3. So don't worry, unless it's a complex puzzle and/or you've only been solving it for a few days, you won't likely forget. And to stay on topic, I would either bring my 3x3 or 5x5.

If you don't yet have sequences committed to muscle memory then it's very easy to forget. I don't solve any one puzzle enough times anymore to retain sequences as muscle memory. I find that I have to re-find most routines if I don't solve the puzzle for a month or more.

I find that I have to re-find most routines if I don't solve the puzzle for a month or more. I've found muscle memory fascinating. I used to know how to solve the Square-1, but modded mine, and therefore didn't solve it for a long time. I recently got a new one and have absolutely no memory of how to solve it. There are other puzzles that I rarely solve, like the 4x4x4, that I can solve by muscle memory, but if you asked me to recite the algorithms that I use, I couldn't even picture them in my head. I find commutators that I figure out on my own much easier to retain than algorithms that I blindly memorize. (on topic) If I could only bring one, it'd be my Helicopter Cube. Such a fun solve

The 3x3 definitely. You can impress people with the classic Rubik's cube, and its fun to solve.
