I was browsing on Lightake and came across a sq-1 whose brand was called 'CubeTwist' (this company also makes the sq-2's)

I don't believe it's KO, because apparently the mf8 sq-1 is not KO; if it is, sorry, I will remove it.

does anyone know what difference this sq-1 has from the mf8 version? is it better than it in some way?

In the case of the Square-1 we recently checked and found its patent was expired. So this is not KO, and fine to post.

First of all, the mechanism is the same. But in my opinion the CubeTwist Square-1 is still better. Right out of the box is turns very smoothly and you don't have to break it in. I've had mine some time now and like to solve it, but up to now there wasn't even any need to lubricate it. The only downside to the CubeTwist Square-1 is that it pops a bit more often than the MF8 Square-1.

When you take a MF8 out of the box, it initially turns quite badly. You have to break it in and lubricate it, but even then you don't get the turning quality you have on a CubeTwist Square-1. Oh, and it tends to get too loose after a while which is quite annoying when you try to do precise turns. I've had two MF8 Square-1's now and both of them had this problem (and no, tightening the screw won't help you there, since that doesn't really affect the movement of the top and bottom layer). On the plus side, it's quite impossible for a piece to accidentally pop out on the MF8 Square-1.

I've had to mf8 puzzles from PUZL.co.uk, and they've both been pretty good (one not so good, because I bought one directly from the owner of PUZL, and it arrived disassembled). If the CubeTwist ones are anything like the Square-2s, they'll turn all right, but have a little clickiness about them.
