This puzzles is meant to be a flat version of the inventors Gear Shift.
There are 9 gears in two different sizes and four ways to fold the puzzle.
The gears can either be rotated all at once or three gears can be rotated after folded.

Oskar discovered a problem with the original version and presented a solution in November 2014. The problem with the original version was that the puzzle tended to fold in both directions at the same time. Cheating was possible by using a bit of force. Also, when the puzzle bent when laid flat. Oskar solved the problem by adding some special hooks at the bottom of the green frame. When the frame is folded in one direction, then the hooks immediately grab into each other and any folding in the other direction is prevented. This makes the puzzle much more stable and robust. Also, Oskar added struts at the four corners of the puzzle at the same length as the hooks. As a result the puzzle stays flat when laid flat.
