Although the main parts of the puzzle are metal, the puzzle parts are actually a hybrid of metal outer parts with plastic (shapeways WSF) feet glued on. This makes the puzzle much smoother turning than if it was all metal, and reduces the printing cost as well.
The inventor did 3 colours because it would add an interesting aesthetic appearance (pretty parts!), while not giving away the solution.
