Looks like a 4x4x4 but is a 3x3x3 with three additional layers of cubies.

This puzzle can be viewed as the earliest ancestor of puzzles like the Evil Twins. One layer of cubies was glued onto a 3x3x3 in each dimension.

This puzzle was mentioned in David Singmasters Cubic Circular 5&6 from 1982. There the wrong name for the inventor was given. Mr Singmaster corrected his mistake in issue 7&8.

A mass produced version was also available.
