A spherical Rainbow Cube. The implementation of a decades old sketch.

This puzzle started its life in July 1982 as a sketch in Scientific American, see image 3. Douglas Hofstadter presented a sketch which he called Lorente's Sphere.
In May 2008 Geert Hellings started a challenge for the community to bring this puzzle to life. In November 2009 Adam G Cowan presented the first 3D printed sample of this puzzle.
All this happened unaware of a patent filed by Mr Josip Matijek. This patent resulted in the Twistball. Twistball is identical from the solving point of view but uses a completely different mechanism. Please refer to the separate entry for more information.
Adam Cowan also designed a second version with splitted leafs. See image 5. If he had finished it it would have been equivalent of the Curvy Dino 2x2x2 Cube.
