The designer presented the first version of this puzzle in February 2012 but released the final version in July of the same year.
The middle part of the puzzle is equivalent to Rubiks Cheese which is a puck with 6 segments. In addition to that middle layer the creator added two layers which make the puzzle equivalent to a hex prism with 3 layers.
However the shape of this puzzle does not resemble the hex prism but a crystal which gave the puzzle its name.
