Mechanically a cousin of Rhombiminx and Lolo's Octahedron this puzzle has a more intuitive shape and looks more like the Cross Cube.
This puzzle can be viewed as a subset of the 4x4x4: Corners and edges are no longer present but the theoretical inner pieces are now visible.
This subset of 4x4x4 is also implemented in Lolo's octahedron and the Windows cube. Reach-Out differs from both variants not only by its appearance (which resembles the Cross Cube) but also because the inner pieces have a visible orientation and the outer pieces are distinguishable.
Ibrahim Abu-Shumays and Mary Abu-Shumays were granted a patent under the number given here in 1986. It was subsequently forgotten.
