The original Hexaminx was made by Tony Fisher and was built from a megaminx. This one works identical but the pieces seems to have lost their respective proportions.
The creator stated that this is variant is the result of design failure: He designed his own pieces for a hexaminx and printed them on his own 3D printer. The result is this strange shape.
