This was an ordinary 4x4x4 cube in its first life. The center pieces of the top and bottom layers are trimmed down to a circle, allowing them to turn independently of the pieces around them. Then the remaining pieces are fused together. Pieces of a second 4x4x4 were used to make the 1st and 6th layers. Blocks of wood or plastic could be used to make these pieces if you don't want to sacrifice a second 4x4x4 cube to the cause.
