Hi everyone!

Here is a new entry in my octahedron shape-mod series: the Mirror Octahedron.
The inner mechanism is off centered so the faces have different thickness. The stickers are made of mirror rainbow media from Oliver.
The measurements are the same as my previous octahedrons: edge length: 97mm, distance between two opposite faces: 80mm.

You can see the video here.
And find it in the marketplace.

I also made a mini version of this puzzle.
As my other mini octahedrons the measurements are half of the standard ones: edge length: 48mm, distance between two opposite faces: 40mm.

I was wondering when someone was going to make one of those. It looks really nice in the photos. I like it. :D

That looks wonderful! You did a great job making all of the small stickers look very even.
Thinking about the geometrical properties of the FTO, I can see some symmetry in the scrambled state. Pretty neat!

That looks very well-made, just like all your other puzzles, Raphaël! :D (PM send :) )

I also really like those stickers, which are much more shiny than mass-produced Mirror Cubes.
And I also agree with Ben, it looks pretty cool to still easily identify all the lines and cuts of the base puzzle, even when it's completely scrambled.

Quuador

:D Thank you all for these nice comments!

Yes I kept a symmetry plane in this design, 4 faces are unique and there are 2 pairs of mirrored faces. But with the rainbow stickers each piece has an unique position and orientation. Because the reflected color depends of the orientation of the sticker, if two similar pieces are swapped it will be visible by the reflected color.

A fun fact about this puzzle is the center piece of the thicker face. It's hidden when the puzzle is solved, but visible when scrambled. inversely in certain configurations, the other center pieces can be completely hidden by the surrounding edge pieces :)

This is absolutely spectacular. I don't post often, but I've been reading about your designs here and watching them on youtube, and this is probably the most hypnotizing one of the octahedra. Fantastic work! This is the kind of stuff that needs to be mass produced asap. :)

I'm wondering about those center pieces: if I understand correctly, since all sides have different distance from the center, edges on thicker sides essentially have "overhangs" attached to them that glide over other parts, as opposed to always under (like on a regular FTO). Is this correct? And does it mean that there are essentially constraints on how protruding a certain face can be, because otherwise the center piece will "cut through" the edge during a turn?

For example, LanLan FTO, on which center pieces are hidden, technically has edges that consist of two parts: one part has flaps that go under centers (like edges on a Rubik's cube, etc), and the other part goes over the centers. This puts a restriction on how close or far to the origin point the faces can be. Considering that here your centers have to be flat and strictly triangular, I imagine there are even more restrictions on geometry?

Thanks again, all these kind words makes me very happy :D

I'm not sure to fully understand your questions, Doctor Hedron.
The puzzle turns freely on all axes, pieces will never be constrained by a bumped piece on their way. I off centered the inner mechanism the most I was able to do. The limits were: keep a minimum thickness so the center pieces could be strong enough to hold a screw and the whole puzzle, and for the other extreme, a face where the center will be completely hidden (like a regular FTO).

Maybe some pictures will explain that better than me
